How long do u get from your appliance?

I have seen lots of posts on here with people saying they can get up to a week out of their appliance and that amazes me. I use colorplast 2 piece click sensura appliance and can only get about 2 days at the most out of it, the smell of charcoal from the filter drives me mad it stinks so bad that I have to change my pouch, I do use odor drops and that doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions? I can even smell it on my clothes so I'm not imagining it. Wish I could get at least 3 days cause I don't have any set changing pattern I just change it every time I can smell it and that can be daily also. Thanks for your input

I change my wafer every 3-4 days(could get an extra day or two but I okay with that pattern)...but I've been known to change my pouch daily:)

Have you tried Coloplast Extended Wear? That may help you get a few more days between changes.

i also use the coloplast 2 peice sensura and it holds on for at least a week, i can keep it for even 8-9 days, but preffer to change it after a week. i don't notice any smells at all, only of course when i empty the bag.

I use Hollister and go 5-7 days depending on what i've done during that time. Lot's of swimming or hot yoga tends to make it necessary to change sooner.

I was wondering the same thing. My daughter is (4) and she's had her ileostomy for almost a year (last November), recently I've been having to change her wafer every day. For the past few months its been like this. It always comes up in the same spot on top. I've tried cutting the wafer smaller, bigger and today I even tried using the Convatec seals under the wafer (before I was using it on top of the wafer). But nothing is working.
I'm going to have to change it later tonight before bed b/c it's up and starting to itch her skin. Once this happens it's only a matter of time before she rips the entire thing off.
Any advice?
should I stop using Hollister and try another brand. I really like Hollister b/c of the way they close at the bottom and the rep. is really nice and sends me samples all of the time. I don't really want to switch but I'm wondering if that's the best thing to do now.
Also, I've been using the No sting barrier wipes, do you think I should try not using it and see how well it holds.

Have you tried a pouch without the filter? You can put on an Osto EZvent to let the gas out. You have to manually open the vent when you need to release gas. I never had any luck with the charcoal filters, they just plug up. I have been using the EZ vent for almost thre years with no problem.

katiesmommy1~has she grown since the last time she saw an ET Nurse? Even fluctuations with weight can cause leaks.

You may want to have her appliance reevaluated, in person, to see if it is still the best one for her.

I wouldn't continue with a product that is causing issues just because the rep is nice...they are all nice and will send samples! You could contact the other manufacturers for samples and see if you have better luck with those, too.

Other than that awful leaking, how is Katie doing? Please keep us posted:)

I use the convatec moldable 2 peice and I get a week out of the wafer and pouch. I am outside and sweat alot. I you are that irritated I sure would try another brand, just to see.

Thanks everyone I wasn't aware that I could get some without the filter and also didn't know about extended wear pouches so I must make some enquiries to the companies and see what I can come up with. I appreciate your input all, take care :-)

Ohio76 - She has grown quite a bit. Especially since she was so sick before her surgery last year. But her stoma has not gotten any bigger..except of course when she's having a tantrum, then it protrudes quite a bit.
I leave room around the wafer b/c of her tantrums, but I know that also probably adds to the leaks.

I've been using the seals around her stoma and I think it's working a little better.

I've requested samples from Convatec but I really like the Holister pouches better. That's why I continue with them.

also, thank you so much for asking about her. She's doing great, just like any other 4 year old. Amazing what a difference a year makes.

you change your bag but not your wafer? I didn't know you could do that. Does it depend on the brand if you can do that?

I wear a two piece, too, LOL~Ron and Allie! tongue The Coloplast Assura Extended Wear wafer gives me a week's worth of wear, and I change the pouch every 3-4 days.

The best deodorizer I've found are the Hollister M9 drops. A few drops in the pouch, and there's no odor at all! smilewinkgrin

have you tried peroxide for the odor? I use it and it works great for the odor.

I have used peroxide. It's very affordable and works well for the odor. But, for me, it bubbles up a lot and causes the pouch to be puffed up with air. Since my insurance covers M9 drops and those don't cause the pouch to puff up, I prefer to use them.

I've had my ileostomy for 3 and a half months and I'm 20 years old, my first couple months was SO aggrevating with bags/changing/incision problems/skin problems....

Just last month I was changing my bag TWICE IN ONE DAY for about a week!? I had a yeast infection from working out in the heat and just scratching like crazy it all just kind of turned into one big skin mess.... my skin kept wheeping so as soon as I'd get a bag on... about an hour later it was peeling up! and it HURT like crazy...

anyways now that it's a little cooler and I learned NOT to itch my last 2 bags have lasted about a week and 2 days.... and I only changed because I wanted to due to the fact I couldn't be SURE if any stool had seeped under the wafer and just wanted to be safe... when I changed.. there was NO stool under the wafer and the wafer was actually still adhered very well...

I'm using hollister one piece appliance and hollister stoma paste.... I actually get into the shower with my appliance on... then as im in the shower with the warm water helping out I peel off the bag and actually do my whole shower with NO appliance on :) :) It feels SOO good for that skin to be free for 5 to 10 minutes, sometimes I stay in there longer just to feel that freedom haha.... I use stoma powder, then BLOW DRY ON COOL for about a minute and when everything is dry, i use a skin barrier wipe, blow dry again for 1 to 2 minutes and then apply the appliance... I can get it all done in about 5 minutes now! it used to be a pain but now it's almost routine

Sorry to hear about your yeast infection problems. You should call your surgeon's office and ask them to call in some Nystatin powder to the pharmacy for you. It's good stuff to keep on hand and will help clear up any yeast infections in the future.

Yeah it's all clear! I talked to my surgeons nurse and she said to get this powder I forget what it's called but it's for yeast infections/athletes foot, and it cleared up in about 3 days completely...
