I have been using the Hollister Adapt convex barrer rings now for about
5 years. I take off the paper and stick it on the wafer and then put it on. Crease the paper so that the clear plastic sticks up to pull it off.
Usually change at 7 days. Have been working very well.

Stephanie.. I am having the same problem as you. Just went to the Dr today and I have a lot of irritation. They don't know if it's from the adhesive or from shaving. I think it's from the adhesive cause it itches and burns. I want to scratch it so bad. They prescribed me Nystatin powder. Im going to give it a try and see if it works well.

Glad to hear you have good results with the Hollister Convex seal. I haven't gone more than 5 days so far but might this time. Tomorrow is 5 days and it feels good today. What pouch do you use? Is your stoma recessed?
Brian
How do you shave? Razor? I use an electric mustache/beard trimmer. Does not scrape your skin off. I think the skin under a wafer is pretty tender. When I used the Eakin seal my trimmer just gummed up with the seal. Now with the Hollister convex it comes off so clean that the trimmer does not gum up. Trimmer works great.

Dan I have been shaving with a regular razor, but I think next time I am going to use a trimmer.

Dan,
I use the Hollister 8754 Skin barrier with the floating flange. The Adapt 79530 ring which I put on the barrier first.
The pouches are the 3904 and are clear. I wanted to try the New Image Barrier and the Pouches with a cloth like material on the back of them. but since I had to have a Colostomy just before Christmas last year and trouble most of this year also they suggested I wait to try another appliance.
Had abscesses before the surgery and they did not empty and later came to life in my legs. Another operation in June. Just finished up with home nursing in September and am doing a lot better.
As for shaving the skin area I started with an electric razor per instructions at the hospital. Now I only use Surgical Razors. They work very well.
I learned more from the Urostomy2 group than all of the WOC people put together.

Forgot to mention the stoma. It is not recessed but not very much above the skin.

Well I am not going to change today after 5 days. Stoma feels good and I want to see how long it will last. See if I can match crank's 7 days. Besides that, I ripped the fingerprint and all the flesh off my right pinky finger right down to the bone. Can't get it wet until tomorrow. Eleven stitches.

Usually a convex seal is used because of a recessed stoma. Why do you use one?

Dan,
I got leaks -- lots of leaks. I started to leak one day when I was near the hospital and went in and seen the ostomy nurse. He put on a Hollister convex wafer. It worked good for 2 days and then came off. skin not dry enough. In another forum I was in one person stressed, Dry, Dry, Dry, the skin. Haven't had any more problems unless I do something stupid.
I also had a purple area around the stoma slowly getting bigger.
I called a Holister ostomy person and she sent me some adapt rings. In about
2 months with the rings I had no leaks and the purple area around the stoma cleared up and has never came back.
I guss if it works -- keep it.

Changed this morning after seven days! No leaks! I could have gone longer. I have never gone longer than five days before.
%$#%@%% I don't remember if I dried the Friars &%$&*
crank, I use a hair dryer to dry the area.....as long as I remember to
I had a call from Oscar at Hollister asking about
the samples they sent. I told him that they should make a flat wafer out of the same material as the convex. Any opinions? Oscar watches this site.
Will the lady that is on the floor laughing please get up.

totally agree with making a flat ring out of the same material as the convex one! Gummy messes are no fun and make changing take forever. If there was a flat one like that I'd sure use it.

Well, I answered my own question.....no, I did not dry the Friars on the last change. Went to bed about
11:30 and had a blowout at midnight. Only 2 1/2 days. My fault, not the seal. I was in the bathroom until after 2 AM waiting for things to stop so I could put on a fresh pouch. As crank said dry, dry, dry the skin. I did last night for sure.

Got real stupid at dinner last evening. I had italian sausage and a load of sauerkraut baked n the oven. Had too much sauerkraut. Emptied my pouch at bedtime. It was all liquid.I knew I was in trouble. At breakfast this morning I was having severe digestive spasms. My stoma was below my skin level and twisted sideways. Blowout. Even the Hollister seal can't stop it. Yes, I knew better, but what the ####. I like sauerkraut. It doesn't like my plumbing. Onward...........Eat sensibly stupid.

I am at wits end. Another blowout this morning while eating breakfast. No idea why. I really thougt the Hollister convex seal was the answer to my totally retracted stoma. It worked for seven days and now I get two! I am not giving up yet though. My other option is surgery to reverse the retraction. Had it done June of 2009. It was good until the stitches dissolved and it was gone again. Any suggestions?

Changed this morning. Everything in good shape. No leaks. Going downstate wednesday to go to the Detroit thanksgiving parade on thursday. Not feeling very confident right now. I feel like I have UC back again. We will be watching from inside the Compuware building.
Wish me well

As an update, still having great luck with my urostomy and the Holister Convex 2 piece. The last one lasted a full week, just wanted to see if it would make it that far, and it still wasn't leaking. Have now been in our hot tub without causing it to leak, hadn't been in it for 2 years because of all my former catheter time. Very pleased with the product, no trouble getting consistent 5-6 days use without any problems.

I will definitely have to look into the Adapt ring. I use an Eakin Seal everytime I change and it's always horrible to get off. I have to shower each time I change the appliance and the residue from the Eakin sticks terribly to the bathtub floor.
Someone else also mentioned that they had a big purple circle around their stoma from the Eakins. I have it as well. Ostomy nurse told me it was a reaction from all of the moisture the Eakin soaks up. Hoping that the Adapt rings will solve it!

Cold water works better than hot water for getting bits of Eakin seals off of the tub floor - but it is still a hassle.
Dan, have you considered using a convex wafer? That is what I have been using and it seems to work really well. It worked better than any seal that I tried. I have been using tincture of benzoin instead of Friars Balsam, mostly because my insurance will pay for it. They are very similar.
Anyway, it might be worth a try to get samples of convex wafers before you try surgery. They come in shallow and deep and they have 1-piece and 2 -piece appliances.
Best of luck to you.

I have tried convex wafers with bad luck. After about
3 hours the outside would come unstuck and the only part still stuck was about
1/2 inch around my stoma. I have some Hollister convex samples. I just might try again. The Hollister samples are very ridgid. Don't look very comfortable.
The Friars that I use is "Friars Balsam Compound Benzoin Tincture USP". Sounds the same.

I have had problem after problem with leaking. I just read this whole thread and am curious to try this Hollister seal. I have my first sample from Hollister coming any day now! I like the Convatec beige bags (the clear ones makes me VERY self conscious) but the leaking was a huge issue. The Eakin Seals seem to help the wear time but they get all bunchy like under my wafer and it's a little uncomfortable. polishdan - thank you SO much for sharing and updating. I absolutely love this site and think I might go crazy without it.

Changed this morning after just two days. Everything fine, no leaks. Had to change today preparing to go to the Detroit parade tomorrow and a few days visiting friends. Then my son called that he has bronchtis and cannot go. Well then we can't go either. We'll just go down for dinner and spend a few days. (hooray)

Are you getting the convex seal? Is your stoma retracted? The Hollister clean up is so much easier than the Eakin seal. I had some trouble with the Hollister, but I'm sticking with it.

I got stupid over the weekend, I decided to use one of the sample I had gotten from coloplast, but it was not convex. I thought it might be ok because my stoma sticks out sometimes about
an inch or so. So I thought it might be ok. so 15 minutes before I had to leave for work Monday morning I could barely see my stoma, it was retracted so much. I knew it would not last long if my stoma was going down under my wafer it would have to cause a leak so I knew I could not go to work with that one on, I had to change it. Won't do that again.

Changed yesterday after four days. Came off clean, no leaks. However, the Hollister convex seal had swelled up so much it almost covered my entire stoma and came up through the wafer
opening. There was very little space for sewage to get through. This is not good. The
opening in the seal is 13/16". My stoma is about
7/8" when it is out. I have been cutting the wafer to 1". This time I did not cut the wafer. I left it at 3/4". Hope this works better.

Uh, let's see. 7/8" = 14/16" and 3/4" = 12/16"
So the the seal is 13/16" and your stoma is 14/16 and the current wafer is 12/16"
So it looks like 3/4" would be too small for you. Or did I miss something?
Oh, by the way, I found out that Smith & Nephew has tincture of benzoin in a spray bottle, so I got some. It is much easier to apply with a spray. It's more even and dries quicker. Very good stuff.

Yes, 3/4" is small but my stoma rarely sticks out. When I cut the wafer 1" the seal swells up and fills the
opening in the wafer so it is hard for the sewage to get out. I thought possibly by using the 3/4" wafer the swelling might be reduced. Trial and error while I don't have to be anywhere but home.
