NASCAR RON - Just a simple question....how does one drive with an ostomy? That is, how can you put the seat belt on and not hurt one's stoma or bother the pouch? cool

This is NOT A GOOD THING TO DO. But I don't wear my seat belt :/ I drive a big truck, and I feel like if I WERE to get in a wreck I would hate to have the seat belt slamming into my stoma. I've seen people use small pillows on the other side of your stomach to "lift'' the belt over your stoma...

try this - it works great for me - i drive about 400 miles every week & i'd feel naked and illegal not waering a belt. you'll need 2 safety pins . Put on the seatbelt in the usual way - then add just a little slack on the lap part of the belt, just enough to lift the belt off the stoma or bag. Then where the belt clicks into the retaining slot, 'clip' both lengths of the belt together with the safety pins (i.e. the bottom of the section coming down from your shoulder & the begining of the lap section). in this way the belt always has the right tension every time you put it on. I guess a diagram would be useful. Needless to say, when you are in someone elses car, you may not be able to do this

My husband uses a "seatbelt buddy" that covers his stoma when he drives.  It's like a rectangle piece of foam.  We purchased it online.  Search under "seatbelt buddy".  It is a lot safer than driving without a seatbelt.

I've worn my seatbelt since the day I came home from the hospital and have never had a problem...even been in an accident without an issue. I'd rather have to 'fix' my stoma then the alternative.

As mentioned there are many products and another solution is to use a clothes pin to hold slack so it doesn't bother you...but will allow the belt to do it's job if needed.

I put the lap part behind me but still have the shoulder strap normal... is that legal?

I wear mine the normal way.

I was in a car accident in high school. The seat belt SAVED MY LIFE! The shoulder strap broke my collar bone, but I'd hate to think what would've been broken if I hadn't been wearing it :(

I wear my seatbelt like normal. I was afraid to wear it when I first came home from the hospital, but now it doesn't bother me. I haven't been in an accident yet though.
I also ride a motorcycle too and wear my gear all of the time. Hopefully if I go down the gear will be enough padding to protect my stoma too.

i havent had a problem wearing it, it doesnt seem to bother me any.
As for just the shoulder belt, i had a car that only had shoulder belts in the front seat, so i guess its legal

Thanks, it did help.  Hey, you sound like a mechanical type....you had put on a thread here the type of products you use...and, of course, I can't find it
 again!

I was wondering if you could re-post the products you use?  I know everything is "individual" for ostomies (mostly), but I thought the best place to start would be the products that most people on here use...
