I  had my jpouch surgery in Jan waiting for takedown date, Iam having mucous discharge from the rectum,what color should it be and how much?

     I had a total colectomy with permanent ileostomy last June 28th and I STILL have mucus, though not as much.  I also had bleeding and still do from time to time.  The mucus is a yellowish color.  The surgeon left my anus intact even though I have a perm. ileo.  He said there were more complications when sewn closed.  Maybe so because if all that were sewn up, where would all this drainage go...inside!

3 1/2 years after my colectomy/ileostomy I still have minimal drainage. After the surgery I was having  the yellowish drainage. Before I went for a follow-up with the surgeon I collected some in a jar (don't even think of asking) and took it with me. I will never forget the look on his face when I handed him the jar and he said "thank you for sharing it with me" as he dropped it in the trash.

    Wow Dan...he sounds a bit cocky.  I never had that much to collect in a jar (makes me think of lightning bugs).  Did you punch air holes in the jar?  smilewinkgrin

No I didn't think to punch holes in the top. Maybe he would have enjoyed it more if I had.

I had my surgery July 28, 2010. I have drainage more often then I like.  Sometimes several times a day.  Does anyone still have the urge that feels like you need to have a bowel movement? I still do from time to time. It is really wierd.

I had my surgery on Jan. 31st, 2010 and yes I do and have mucus drainage. I have it more at night and have to wear a pad to bed. Yuck! The first couple of days after surgery it was uncontrollable :(

     psswift...I had my surgery June 28th, 2010.  For a few months following, I did feel like I had to move my bowels but the surgeon's assistant said it is very common.  I believe he referred to it as phantom rectum.  However, I no longer have the feeling.

I call it moop (mucus poop), and I have a lot of it a couple times a day and no control over it. But it is a clear, white color. My GI says I have so much because I have active crohns in my rectum.

Dreamer, if you have active Crohns in your rectum, why not get it removed?

Christine, I think having everything sewn up has complications with healing, not keeping the mucus inside. After all, the mucus is coming from the rectum or whatever has been left. And if nothing was left, there's no mucus to come out!

      Just the anus is there, no rectum or colon.  Sometimes I think the mucus is coming out the vagina but everything was checked there ....PAP smear, transvaginal ultrasound shocked ...not a pleasant test.  Everything is A-OK.  I do still have a hemmoroid (never get the spelling right on that) issue but Tucks seem to help.

I had a colectomy in 2003 with my rectum left in case I wanted to reconnect. I continue to have mucus discharge with the same urgency as when I had U.C.. After a limited sigmoidoscopy my surgeon told me that I have active proctitis and am now being treated with Canasa suppositories. So far so good (after a week). It's a bit of a bummer to have it going on but it's back under control now.

knahns 1....It is completely normal to have mucus discharge. For a while after surgery there can be a little blood in it and it is very common for there to be a little poop (that makes it through the loop ileostomy and past the stoma). So I think the answer is that it can be any color (depending if there is a little blood and poop) and I think the amount varies for everyone. If you are feeling uneasy I would give your surgeon a call. Never hesitate to do that....it is part of their job.
