Weight gain after subtotal colectomy

Hi

I am due to have a sub total colectomy in a few months due to slow transit constipation. For as long as I can remember I have had constipation and can only go to the toilet with laxatives or picolax which takes over my life. I'm only 24 and hate the idea of being like this for the rest of my life being extremely bloated feeling full heavy and tired from it all. I have read so many of the posts and is so reassuring hearing peoples stories and feeling like ur not alone! I had read somewhere else that after the surgery people had weight gain that was unexplained.. I wanted to know if anyone has experienced this as I would have thought it would be the opposite due to being on the toilet more frequently!

If anyone has any experience with this or info I would love to know! Thank u x

Hi Rosemary

I can't see anything on there from people suffering from weight gain after a subtotal colectomy. If anyone had experience this or the opposite weight loss please advise.

I was like you, lived on laxatives for 22 years before my colostomy. I was miserable that I actually begged my dr for the surgery. After surgery I did gain weight but later lost it. My dr said it was probably from being able to fully absorb the nutrients...and fats....in what I was eating. Before surgery I barely ate because I hated the way I felt after but after surgery I felt great so I ate more.

Teddy - Last summer I had a sub total colectomy.  The morning of my surgery I weighed 100 pounds, a week after surgery I weighed 92.  Since then I have been unable to regain al the weight I lost and currently weigh 96 pounds. 

Like Rosemary, I welcome you to visit the total colectomy thread.  That is where those who have (or had) colonic inertia post.  There is a weath of information and much support there.
