ouch sounds like you had a partial obstruction. hope it is really all cleared. are you able to drink water? if drinking causing you additional pain, then maybe the obstruction is not totally clear.

about emptying the bag, have your partner get you some sort of a container, not too big, just like they gave me in the hospital, so i put the opening of the bag into the container and then empy the container into the toilet. gross i know, but just for now it can help you.

things will get better for you, just takes some time.

You can try different pain medicines too. They may not all cause nausea for you. I actually had to switch back to Dilaudid after trying Percocet and Tramadol as it was the only one that didn't make me nauseated. people tolerate pain meds so differently. I had good luck with Vicodin after my latest incision surgery too. Tylenol didn't cut it for me in the first few weeks, but maybe it will be enough for you.

As far as the splashing problem. I did the container thing for a while at the hospital and that worked. Also, floating an island of toilet paper in the toilet and them aiming for that when you empty can prevent splash back, even from a pretty good height.

I hope you feel better. Hang in there, it will get better and don't be afraid to go back to the hospital if you are having problems. It is a major surgery and lots of little complications can happen. I had to go back three separate times after my surgery and everything eventually worked out fine.

Can you get one of those padded toilet risers I see in mail order catalogs that sits on the toilets (must have a suction device)...looks like they are 3-4" tall. Maybe a medical supply place has them?

Peeing standing up into the portable urinal is a temp solution to keep you from being in major discomfort trying to sit and pee...better idea for you.

Insofar as emptying the contents of the pouch...can you expel it in a container and then pour into the toilet and rinse out? Or...If you can get a plastic chair that is higher than the toilet and put it in front of the toilet and put the seat up and empty the pouch that way possibly?

Know what you mean about being tall and low toilets! I am 6'3 and long legs (38 inch inside leg) and so after surgery can be painful trying to get up and down to toilet without handrails. Am quite lucky as in uostairs bathroom the sink is on one side and bath on the other so could grab hold of on or the other. In downstairs shower room the radiator is bside toilet and I just hope it holds my weight!

Could hospital lend you a walking frame as a temporary measure that you could use as a substitute handrail.

As for emptying bag, again having long legs doesn't help with kneeling as always at wrong height. Easiest way I've found is sit as normal, wriggle back a bit and empty bag down front of bowl between legs, if you see what I mean. Also no way I am kneeling on public toilet floors, I can always carry those toilet seat covers if somewhere nasty but covering whole floor area, oh no. Or maybe that's just the pubs I go to! lol

Hi, Thanks for the tips. I am hanging in.... much better night last night, got a lot of sleep, still exhausted, but so it is..... the night of vomiting was incredibly traumatic, was so hard to believe that it wouldn't happen again, even though I knew I had no solid food and no narcotics in me....

My surgeon said she hadn't wanted to tell me in advance but there is a 15-20% readmission rate after this surgery (sorry, I told you), and that she thought that I ONLY vomited for 5 hours was a very good sign. She lives in another world from me (said my butt wound was "beautiful.") She doesn't think it's an obstruction because I am getting plenty of stuff in the bag.... just the body adjusting. Says I need to start solid foods again by tomorrow, that's scary. I'm going for liquids w/some protein shakes today.

I am starting to feel the stitches more on the bottom.....

So, sleepy......

I also had the vomiting 4-5 days after.  My docs thought it was from the anesthesia wearing off.  I didn't have it after surgery #2 when they changed my anesthesia to a spinal block which allowed them use less of the general anesthesia.  The thing I remember most about it was how much it hurt.  Holding a pillow against it as I threw up helped a lot, but my abdomen hurt like crazy during and after all the vomiting.
