silly question - handicapped parking?

This is a silly question..but just wondering, did anybody use a handicapped sticker for the few weeks/months after surgery? Can you get one?

Didn't get one, nor did I need one. I needed to walk a lot after my surgery to get back in shape, and parking in a blue zone wouldn't have let me do that.

No, I was encouraged by my surgeon to get a lot of walking in. Didn't need it.

you probably can get one, when my husband had some surgery years ago, it went badly, he ended up on dialysis and all kinds of junk, he had one for like a month afterwards, because he was so weak.
i wouldn't get one though, once you feel like going out, you will be ok to walk to the store.

I would depend on your individual circumstances.

I was pretty malnourished after a few of my surgeries but never even thought to ask for one...the walking is more important to recovery and like summerstorm mentioned when you feel like going out your should be able to walk longer distances.

Never had one or asked for one. After one of my surgeries I was very malnourished and couldn't walk far so when I needed to go to supermarket to go food shopping it was just before Xmas one year and husband working so my mother took me and they have wheelchairs you can borrow that fit in the trolleys. So we used one of those as it was huge supermarket and I couldn't walk all way around it. Soon got my energy back after Xmas though so never worried about a disabled pass.

I had one, but i received it a year before I ever had surgery. I was severely anemic and had regular blood transfusions and the lack of blood made me really weak. So my regular doctor got me a handicap pass so when I was tired and needed to go somewhere I wouldn't have to walk really far if I didn't feel capable. I used it for my first surgery because I had been in a flare for 2 months before hand, and thusly had no muscles and simply couldn't walk a long distance in one go. But I stopped using it as soon as I felt able. I just had surgery last week and will probably use it if I go to the store or something and have to park far away when I know walking around the store will wear me out. But I honestly never really use it anymore.

I had one when I had colitis ... it might be worth a shot to try until you feel like you are up for walking. I've been post-surgery (first surgery to get ostomy in july 09, reversal in nov. 09, and ostomy put back feb. 10) and I still have days when walking from a parking lot to the store is an effort.

I don't have a car, but it's been bothering me how much it costs to take cabs to doctor's appointments..... my primary doc just suggested that she sign me up for the alternative public transport system for disabled people. I had never thought of that, and I wish we thought of it sooner, as it takes 2-3 weeks to process the application, and I'm almost 5 weeks out of surgery, and hoping I won't need it .... but I can't sit very well now, and even w/my waffle pillow, the hard seats of the bus/subway seem like too much, and having to stand could be worse. I always thought of this service as for people in wheelchairs, but it's broader than that....... so, if anyone uses pubic transportation a lot and has this option, I'd recommend signing up before surgery..... costs me around $30 one way for a cab, this service is $2.

Where I live in Florida in an over 55 community there are a lot of handicapped parking spaces and hardly ever an empty space....lol. In the shopping centers too!

For the 5 years he suffered with his UC we could have used one quite a few times but probably would have had a hard time finding a space anyway. Most times I would drive so if he was in distress I could just drop him off so he could get to a rest room. I often wonder sometimes when I see various people who legitimately park in those spaces with their permits hanging from their mirrors............but we all know how "unsick" you look with UC when you really are very sick and those few less extra steps can make a big difference especially when you need a bathroom immediately. So I try to think of that when it looks like a healthy person is using that spot.
