Spoke with Hubby's Ostomy nurse at Mayo yesterday about various issues....I also posted this on another ostomy board but thought I would share it with you all.  I am NOT an expert - far from it - a newbie to the Ostomy world and trying so hard to help my husband.  His situation is not severe but certainly trying to head it off before it can develop into a bad case that gets way ahead of us.

We will experiment with other manufacturers but the Hollister New Image 2 piece system with the lock and roll pouch overall he likes and we are comfortable with except for a skin irritation issue.

Since the irritation is only in the outer area that the adhesive comes in contact with his skin... applying powder (very thin application) and a barrier application doesn't seem to be getting rid of it..........the dermatologist stated even if and when it clears up if you keep on using the same wafer it is just going to keep on occurring. Going to contact the dermatologist to prescribe a gel or foam recommend by another member here.

So.........we did try the wafer that is all pectin once but it just doesn't feel as secure and definitely less wear time. He put one on yesterday and I got some tape. (Ordered the specific Medipore tape from Edgepark as I couldn't find it locally.)

The nurse said she has learned from other patients to try the following....so I am passing this along in the off chance it may help someone else....can't give our opinion yet but will see how it helps if it does help.

1. If using a wafer with the adhesive that irritates you, try applying Medipore cloth tape to your skin first (which is supposed to be very skin friendly) and then have the adhesive of the wafer stick onto the cloth tape.

2. If you want to cut away the adhesive portion off of the wafer and then use the Medipore tape to tape it down.

3. This scenario seems the best which we will try first.....use the all pectin wafer and tape around the wafer with the Medipore cloth tape for extra reinforcement.

Not sure how this will really help but it's part of the trial and error process for us.

I will also try to obtain other wafers with a more "skin friendly" wafer I have jotted notes about sifting through different posts here and there.

I too prefer Hollister's New Image pouch, so I was reluctant to have to switch products when my skin troubles began. However, I found a great compromise and didn't have to. The various companies all sell a product called a barrier - it's a square shaped piece of material, the same size as the wafer, with an adhesive on on side. They use a different adhesive from the one used on the wafer. Wafer goes on barrier, barrier goes on skin, and you can use whatever pouching system you want without it having to touch your skin. Then you just hope that you don't end up allergic to the adhesive on the barrier, haha. Although I use a Hollister pouch, I use a Coloplast barrier. Coloplast prides themselves on having the most hypoallergenic products out there, so is probably your husband's best bet.
