a little trouble with stoma

Well,

Thought all was going well with my previous change.....so, I waited for day 5 (today)..well, noticed a little blood in my bag this morning which went away..then, when I changed this afternoon, I noticed my skin wasn't looking so good....

Not sure why the change from the last time.....the only thing done differently was that the nurse had me put the cavalon skin prep on ...though, I don't think that explains everything....I haven't really had any leaks, and the skin is irritated just around the stoma....

Basically, I've got an eakin seal under a hollister cut-to-fit new image wafer...and, that's it..besides the skin prep....

waiting on a moldable wafer from convatec...wonder if I should try the moldable from hollister?

Anyway, any ideas would be great....

Could be a possible skin reaction to the cavilon, you may be allergic. I would try it on an area of skin away from stoma and tape a peice of eakin seal over the top and leave it for a few days and see if any reaction.

You can get small amount of blood from the stoma itself it is gets irritated or rubbed by the bag, it is normal and only a concern if you see larger amounts or it is coming from the bowel rather than skin of the stoma.

It may take a few attempts of different wafers and bags until you find the combo that works for you. I would recommend cutting little bits of the wafers and sticking them to skin for few days and see of you have reaction first before trying them around stoma, just in case you are allergic to the adhesive.

Have to agree with stripey. I have a RAGING allergy to the cavilon barrier wipes; they caused crazy skin irritation for me. Wipe one somewhere on your leg or something and make sure you don't break out before putting it on your belly again!

I see the nurse tomorrow and will tell her all was well 'til the cavalon wipes....

I have had problems with the skin around my stoma being very irritated, when this is the case I use a barrier wipe or spray to protect the skin, and also a white powder which helps to heal up where the redness is. If the cause of yours is an allergy then I don't know how much this will help but if not perhaps you could try these. And yeh I was a little worried when I first saw a little blood but it was coming from where it was irritated, or if you've 'over cleaned' the stoma it can cause it to bleed a little. All the best.

me too!! i was allergic to cavillon wipes.. my nurse swore by them but they didn't agree with me. I had a huge spotty rash on my skin under the wafer and it was very sore and itchy. Good luck

i would put the rash on the wipes, and like was already said, the stoma itself can bleed easily. i have managed to scratch it during changes and end up with what looks like tons of blood in the bag. nothing to worry about, if its shortly after you did a change, or if you ran into something that bumped your stoma

Also, make sure you are measuring your stoma if doing cut to fits (I think I remember you are still fairly fresh out of surgery, yes?) After six weeks I decided I didn't need to anymore, but when I went up to CC for my follow up I discovered a good amount of red skin around the stoma when they took the bag off. Turns out my stoma had shrunk again and I was cutting too big. This last change I had almost no red at all thanks to a good fit.
