My Alternative to Expensive Ostomy Underwear & Jeans . . .

I cannot afford the official ostomy underwear, so I had searched and searched for alternatives and decided to make my own.

I bought bikini underwear and was going to cut the front off and then sew it onto the inside front of a pair of briefs underwear to create the ''pocket''.

When I tried on the bikini underwear and put on a pair of brief underwear over top, to see if it would work...it came to me.  Heck, I didn't need to cut and sew anything.  I just wear 2 pair of underwear and it works like a charm.  The bikini underwear comes up perfectly to the bottom of my wafer/pouch connection and keeps the pouch off of my skin.  The brief then helps hold he pouch in place between both pair of underwear.   I bought the knit, t-shirt type of underwear and not the slippery nylon kind.  Works for me, but then I am a granny, so granny pants aren't such a big deal smilewinkgrin

Also, maternity jeans work very well for me.  Very comfy.  I felt strange buying maternity pants at my age, but they really work well with my stoma placement.

glad you found a comfotable solution :) and that's exactly what i'm also doing actually :):) i wear a bikini underwear that goes under the bag and on top of it an underwear that are like shorts. they are made of cotton, very comfy and hold the whole buisness great! i dont like the pocket thing. it makes emptying too complicated and messy :/

Ooooh, I need to look into the shorts underwear. I bet they are even more secure. I had wondered if the "pocket thing" might be a little cumbersome.

I just wear normal undies from K-Mart (your Walmart if you're in the US). Full briefs are fine and much cheaper :) I've had samples of 'ostomy' undies sent to me and never used the pocket bit anyway (too much of a hassle for me). I just tuck my bag in my undies and away I go.

I've been wearing bikini underwear w/the pouch on the outside, and then a pouch cover over it..... but your two undies idea is intriguing, especially to help keep my bottom warm in the winter....

Amazing how creative people are!

I might give this idea a try! You don't have any trouble with it all bunching or riding up? All of those layers seem like they might get in the way and be cumbersome. Hmmm....I will have to give this a go I think!

I don't have any trouble with bunching at all.   Both are knit, light t-shirt type underwear [Hanes] and they stick to one another for lack of a better description.   Nylon undies would be too slippery and would slide around.

Hi I had the same problem, but it was the night time support I really needed, I tend to move a lot and I don't like to wear underware to bed, so I bought a maternity belly band from eBay and turned it inside out, cut a + to pull the bag through and put it on like a skirt, inside out, pulled it up and over the bag, it sits nicely and look like a little skirt, it stops the bag from moving and I don't have to wear undies to bed. As soon as i had the stoma I. ordered stoma panries, pretty lacy with a pouch for the bag. But they dont do more than any other kind of underwear plus pantyhose and now heavier tights for winter.
People siad i could still wear tight clothes and jeans but in reality jeans make the bag leak and the convex lifhr I use skows undwr tight clothes.
Anyway, i found i dont have to spend money or do anything special about underwear. It was nice to discover that at least there was one thing where i didnt have to make major changes.

I just wear normal undies and jeans. I wear the ladies 'shorts' type undies and wear all types of jeans even the super skinny ones and lucky as never had a problem with it causing a leak even though it is a high output stoma and needs emptying more that normal one. With jeans make sure they are ones with elastene or similar in them and then they have ability to let bag fill without causing a problem.

I think we don't really need to buy any kind of special underwear.
I cannot wear jeans though because the press up against my stoma and cause leaks.
But I think it depends on how low or high the jeans ride. My surgeon (who considers himself to be a very cool guy) told me I should just wear low-riding jeans. But I don't fit into them, so I'm just wearing sweat pants on the weekends till the reversal and don't really care.

I can't wear low riding jeans as they cut right across stoma so wear the ones that sit right on the waist which is a good two/three inches above the stoma. I have high waist and 37 inch inside leg so I get my jeans/trousers/leggings etc from shops that have a tall range and luckily loads do now and even easier on the internet. Used to only have choice of Long Tall Sally but now loads of stores have jeans in a 36 inch inside leg which is great as Long Tall Sally stuff is so expensive for what it is and for some reason they cut their jeans with a backside big enough to fit J-Lo even the skinny fit ones. I may have long legs and be skinny but never been blessed with a J-Lo backside so was left with all this extra fabric that made it look like I was wearing those jodphurs the world war one pilots wore that stick out at the sides. Tried cultivating it as a fashion look but no one else took it up! :)
