This second stage of this surgery process has just been hell. Now I have one more weird thing going on.

I know it is normal to pass mucous from the rectum, especially now that I'm hooked back up inside and the bowel isn't in use. I had this happening for awhile after surgery, but it stopped when I got sick with the abscess. I never had it again until this past Friday when it happened twice and then again twice on Monday.

Then Monday, while working with the stoma nurse at CC, my secondary opening started dumping out huge amounts of that same mucous stuff that was coming out of the rectum before. I know it's the same stuff because it looks and smells the same (awful smelling stuff! Gag!) It kept happening every few minutes and it was quite a lot. She actually went to ask my surgeon's nurse about it who only said, "Better out than in.". Ok, thanks.

At any rate, it made that pouch change quite the adventure. Since then, I haven't had anymore urges to pass mucous from my rectum at all, but this mucous keeps dumping into my bag. It's greatly increasing the frequency with which I have to empty and it's very annoying. Has anyone else experienced this? I can't figure out why the stuff would go against gravity and peristalsis to go out the ileo versus the rectum? I can't believe I'm blocked off or anything since I easily passed a large amount of it twice on Monday, once just a couple of hours before this started in their office.

Any thoughts or experiences at all?

When I had a temp loop ileo I had the same issue and would pass that gross, disgusting stuff both ways:( but it wasn't the quantities you describe. It could be that because your body is doing better its getting it out of your pouch and will slow down??? I went through stages that were worse than others with it but I also didn't have any control when it came out my bottom...can you control it? Also, another thought, because your lower hole is more flush it's probably causing some of the large amount.

I fortunately do have total control when it comes out the rectum. In fact, the first urge I had on Friday was when I was talking to my son's eye doctor and I was able to wait about 30 minutes or so before I went to the bathroom. I feel good about this, I think it bodes well for when I start using the j-pouch.

Today I decided to track how often I was emptying and how much the output was and, wouldn't you know it, the mucous into the bag was almost nothing today and this evening it decided to go south instead of north. So, I guess it's just going to be sporadic like that until this is over. Only 41 days until my imaging appointment! :-)

I have to get mucous suctioned out of my unused colon once every 6 months. Sure feels better out than in. Sorry I can't help with your particular question. Rosemary

Ugh. Well, now it's only 40 days..... hang in. One day it'll all be a blur....
