what should i expect with a permanat ileostomy

hi jackie, you have been having a tough time recently & its only natural to be upset & emotional, you, I and all the great posters here have been through an experience of sickness, surgery & the aftermath which even the bravest & most couragous people in the world would not choose & would be scared to face, please hang it there as best you can, it is difficult for you now but i know from your posts that you will beat this

as for the perm ileo & sewn up butt, i have this & since May 2010 & it has given me my life back, its the one best decision i've made in years, sure consider all the options at your own pace, dont be afraid of this option as it can work really well

     I believe I am one of the rare ones in here who had a total colectomy with end ileostomy and do NOT have my butt sewn shut.  Hope my surgeon's decision doesn't come back and bite me on the butt because some of the people in here have told me that their surgeon said this is done so the anus doesn't develop cancer .

      Oh well, I try not to dwell on the negative.  I had a hematoma in the anus about a month post op which hurt like the devil.  My surgeon just went in there, drained it (thought I would go through the roof..lol) and placed me on a regimen of antibiotics.  I figured if it were sewn shut...how the heck would he ever get in there to do that?  Just have to have faith in your surgeon !

Christine, WHEW! You are right. How would he have gotten in there to drain it if your anus was sewed shut? auuugh! Mind boggling. I had no disease, injury as you know and I still have my whole colon and rectum and everything in me. I had one actual bad case of disuse colitis in colon this summer but it cleared itself. So much we all have to deal with. Glad you are doing better. Rosemary

I know there are 2 definite different schools of thought on the "butt sewing". Yesterday was his first stomaversary. Hopefully if there ever is a situation as blueglass mentioned above there is a way to treat it without being too invasive.

As we all hope and pray, the surgeon making the decisions has in fact made the correct one for the individual involved.

So far my husband has been indeed very fortunate in that everything has gone very well for him in his healing and recuperation. Actually he has gained weight and needs to watch it and it wouldn't hurt to take a few of those pounds off before it becomes more and more. He has realized it himself so doesn't need me to nag him about it.

I see you're from Australia. I'm going to be needing to get either a Kpouch done(and on top of that a conversion from a failed jpouch to a kpouch as opposed to a fresh kpouch), or a permanent ostomy(what I've got right now would be best described as a semi-permanant lol), which I'm fine with too, but wanted to explore the option of utilizing my failed jpouch first like many others have had to...before it's finally taken out for good. Actually would have loved to get a BCIR, but unless I win the lotto, that ain't going to be happening since it's a US-only operation. My search for Aussie's who've had successful kpouches, has only led me to one person, who I can't contact to see how they are going with it anyway...I hope they are alright actually.
Sorry, by the way I found you(in a thread) by way of a google search for kpouches in Australia, just in case your wondering, what, how, who, and why???    I'd also like a recommendation for a surgeon in Brisbane in relation to permanant ostomies at least. I'm not asking you to say that here in a public setting, and since we can't do personal messages on this site, if you have a jpouch.org account feel free to personal message me over there(I go by the same user name there too).
