Home from the Hospital with Loop Ileo

Brandon was released from the Hospital after his JPouch surgery after 5 days.  All went well other than some excessive bleeding from the drain site.  The prior two surgeries were done laprascopically but this time he does have a "C-section" type incision in addition to 4 laprascopic incisions.   The drain was clogged and the blood was escaping from around the drain and the amount of blood that was coming out looked as though someone had stabbed him.  Since we saw no blood with the first two surgeries, this pretty much freaked us out.   But doctors said this was normal.  Drain has been removed and bleeding has slowed.   Most of his discomfort at this point is the incision site and pain in his shoulders ( I assume from the remaining trapped air from the surgery).  He has difficult time walking and standing upright but is getting better every day.

With the loop ileostomy, is there any chance that stool can get into the lower part of the intestine and enter the JPouch.  I know that it supposed to be diverted out into the bag until the JPouch heals.  Also yesterday, he went to the bathroom from the rectum and passed alot of white mucousy stuff (and a little blood).  Is that normal?

I had my loop ileo and J-pouch created in one step about 6 weeks ago.  I'm still having some mucous, a little blood and what appears to be waste coming out out my rectum.  Normal!  As long as it doesn't happen more than a couple times a week, he should be fine. 

I've had some bad skin irritation issues with my loop ileo, but this forum is a great place to get advice if he has that too.  The best advice I've gotten is to use convex rings.  I just got my first set in the mail yesterday and am trying it out today - so far so good!  And definitely use skin prep and powder if there's any redness or irritation around the new stoma.  Best of luck to your son and a Happy New Year to your entire family!

Beachgirl24 you said the muchs shouldNOT happen more than a couple of times a week i have mucus or what looks like stool come out everyday and i have the ileo loop. it's painful when going to the bathroom but once its over i feel fine and i have told my doctor/surgeon he said that was good that im getting my feeling
for MotherofteenwithnoUC does your son do any type of sports prior to surgery i did yoga and i think that helpedme heal quicker. the walking is such a struggle. i encourage you to encourage him to straighten his back for like 10 sec. .....well this is the sec. surgery i had booth mines in one so i guess you know what to do :)

Welcome to the forum, Caligirl!  I actually had my surgery in Virginia, so I'm not any help there, sorry!  Feel free to ask any questions.  This forum has been great for my post-op questions, it just makes me wish I'd joined earlier.  Good luck with your surgery.  Keep us updated on how everything goes for you.

It is normal for mucous, blood, and possibly stool to come from the rectum. I had a few days of nothing followed by about a week of passing brown watery mucous (old surgery blood, etc). Then things settled down a bit. Sometime I will have some mucous every day, but mostly it is about every second or third day. Just feels like the need to go, but I can wait until it is convenient, etc. I haven't had food go down that way, but I know it is possible and does happen. It won't hurt anything.
