Hey, everyone! I've been out of surgery for about 4 1/2 hours now and I'm doing great at this point. They gave me an injection in my right side that is supposed to block pain from the incision area for 12-16 hours. Between that and the pain med pump, I am very comfortable. I've walked two laps in the halls already. :-)

They ok'd me for clear liquids right away, but I've decided to stick with a little ice chips for now and try the liquids in the morning. I would rather be conservative and spare myself the misery!

Funny story: the last two time I had a little trouble with my catheters post-surgery. It seemed like I just could never get them drain properly, they were uncomfortable, etc. In the recovery area I was gushing to my husband about how whoever did this one did a great job because it was really comfortable. Well, I got transferred to my room and my nurse informed me that I didn't have a catheter so if I felt the urge to go, I would need to get up to the bathroom. No wonder it was so comfy.....like nothing was even there! Haha! :-)

You sound great! Glad everything went well and that you're feeling comfortable.

That's funny about the catheter.... hospitals will do that to you!

Isn't that great news!!!  Be sure to stay comfortable for your stay.  If the pain gets bad and gets ahead of you it takes a good hour or so to get equalized it seems.  Happy to see you posting so soon.  Good for you.

Sigh, pain block injection wore off. Less than awesome. It's not terrible though.....kind of feels like I did 1,000 sit ups.

I think my roommate is really sick, like maybe in for a bad flare or something. She is in a lot of pain and they have her on TPN. She seems to be having a rough time. If you guys could send her some good vibes and healing thoughts, that would be awesome.

Had rounds this morning and apparently I'm doing well. Going to try a little clear liquids this morning and see how that goes. Will definitely be progressing slowly and paying attention to how I feel as I go along. They changed the dressing this morning and the wound looks way better than I expected! I was slightly worried it would be uncomfortable to look at, but it really was not at all.
I was also allowed to come off of my oxygen. All good progress. :-)

Everything sounds like you are off to a good start.  Sorry about your room mate, though.

I don't think it would have made any difference in my situation, but sometimes I think I should have gone to Cleveland Clinic.  I am in Newark and went to Riverside.  I had a great surgeon and they took good care of me.  I was surprised though at the lack of ostomy information by the nurse who met with me.  I knew more by searching this site and the internet, before my surgery, than they apparently know. 

I have heard the IBD department at CC is like a "village." :-)

CJ: it really is like a little village here. I've been getting hugs all morning in the hallway from nurses and aides who remembered me and knew I was back for my closure. It's so nice to be on this dedicated floor and know that everyone here is dealing with some version of the same stuff you are and the nurses and staff definitely know their stuff.

I had to go to the ER at Riverside when we were trying to figure out what was going on with me in November (the abdominal abscess). I told the doctor I had an ileostomy and he proceeded to ask me how I pee!

Not to knock Riverside, it's a good hospital (I had my youngest son there) but it makes a big difference in your comfort level when you don't have people asking you crazy questions like that. I'm just glad you didn't go to LMH! You might not have made it out alive!

Just go slow with food for for the next several days...the gas pains can be very bothersome after you get home but they do subside. Glad your recovery is going well!! It's nice to poop again after having the ileo!

I think I'm going every couple of hours or so. It doesn't seem constant or anything. I've had good control, too so that's awesome. A little nervous about sleeping here in a bit....but I know mine won't be the first mess to be cleaned up if I end up making one.

They keep asking if I've passed gas yet, but I haven't. Plenty of belching, but nothing the other direction.

And.....I finally get food at lunch. Just planning to add some vanilla ice cream and applesauce to my regular clears tray for my first venture.

I'm just glad I finally get to eat something. It's been since Sunday and I'm feeling very run down and tired.
