How much do you drink?

    For the past few months I have been suffering with bone pain in my upper right arm.  I saw my cardiologist and am ok in that department.  I also went to a bone specialist and he took an xray.  It only confirmed what I already know...osteoporosis but there is no fracture.  This past week I noticed a feeling of dizziness/lightheadedness and fatigue.  Was just wondering if I am dehydrated???  I have to keep reminding myself and sometimes hubby has to remind me to drink, drink, drink.

    Do you ostomates have a certain amount of fluid which you make sure you drink every day?  I have a permanent ileo.

Hydration is very individual. I drink 20oz of coffee in the morning and then drink nothing until I hit the gym at 4pm. However, if I am engaged in long hikes I drink copious amounts of water and I carry Vitalyte. It's up to you to figure out what your hydration needs are. Keep in mind that eating salty snacks or sipping bouillon is another way to retain fluid loss. You might find drinking a hydrating beverage can help too since it has sodium in it.

I just try to drink a lot, to always have a water bottle or glass of water near me (which reminds me to get up and get one right now)! I definitely find that I drink more than I used to.... but I don't measure.

Hope you feel better soon. Sorry about the osteoporosis.... pred, the gift that keeps on giving....

I drink the following:

Early morning - 8 oz of coffee, 12 oz of juice mostly diluted with water
Mid morning - 8 oz of coffee
Through the work day (7:30-2pm) - 1 litre of water (32oz)
Later afternoon/evening - usually another 8-16 oz of water or water/juice.

This is pretty much what I drank before surgery, with more water during exercise.

I have had my iliostomy since October 2011 so am pretty new to this stuff. I have been drinking three 14 oz. servings of herbal tea per day (morning, afternoon, evening) and have an additional 8-12 oz. of liquid during the day. So far I have had no symptoms of dehydration so I am thinking that my fluid intake is ok for me. May have to increase the intake in the warmer weather and/or when I am more physically active.

Aw darn, right Dan? hehehehe!

I drink the equiv of 3 quarts of liquid per day, 4 quarts if I am in a hot climate. Rosemary

I had an illestomy and paid no attention as to how much I drank. Drank only when I was thirsty. In less than one month I was back in the hospital with kidney failure. The surgeon said I needed to drink one gallon every day. I filled a gallon jug of water in the morning and made sure I drank it all before going to bed. I weigh about 200# so the required amount might be varied a little. I did not have any more problems and had the reversal in about another couple of months. I still have kidney problems resulting from the dehydration.

I know Dan. It's a really hard regime to keep up. But that was what I was told to do. In the winter I disguise some of that water in the form of decaf coffee. Not suppose to be dehydrating like caffeine is. Who knows?

Jud's response above is why I was told to drink so much. As without the absorption capacity of our colon we are at risk for dehydration. BUT, it sure is a drag.

The code I was told was drink 3 quarts, pee out 2 quarts, and 1 quart gets absorbed into the body. Who really knows? Guts are very complex. Rosemary

Hubby makes sure he always has a full glass of water nearby and drinks from it.  He likes to have a regular coffee in the morning and sometimes during the day.  We were told regular coffee is ok so long as you offset it with a cup of water to counter act the dehydrating effect of caffeine????  He is good at remembering to drink but it doesn't seem like he needs a huge amount of water either as I initially thought and read about when he first had his surgery.

I drink about 48 -56 oz per day. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I do get headaches sometimes, and when I do I drink. I hate to have to pee constantly, especially in the cold bathroom at my place of work. I have no meat on my bones!!

    Thank you all for your responces! wink    I started drinking more water.  Hopefully, these ailments will go away.

     After my operation my surgeon said in a year I would feel like a NEW woman.  What he failed to tell me was that it would be a 90 yr old woman tongue .

LOL! Sorry to hear about your pain, but we can all thank @#$!@% Prednisone for that... tongue

I also thought, like PolishDan, that this would be a "drinking" thread ala Jack, Jim, Red, or Black..LOL!

My shoulders hurt, my left hip hurts, my knees hurt, and my feet hurt for several steps when i get up from sitting....I'm not going to take any pain reliever...I'm off all meds...I'm sure it's prednisone that did this....my one year anniversary comes up in April (woohoo!). I will start back in the gym with light weights (cause I think that's the only thing that will cure what prednisone did). If pain doesn't reduce within 6-8 weeks, I guess I'll take a trip up to mayo.

Maybe a little Jim or Jack woudln't hurt..LOL!

I have a 32 oz. water bottle that I try to fill up at least twice a day - Normally about 96 oz. of water a day and I can definitely tell when I don't drink enough. However, I put a Propel packet into each bottle to give it a little flavor. I wouldn't drink as much if it were plain water. Without the colon I am told, you should be drinking about 2-3 times as much as a "normal" person.

Yep I use propel too. Love all the flavors they offer. Just a little of the powder mix in some water makes all that water drinking a LOT easier to take. Rosemary
