burns/irritation

I did the marshmallow thing today and once we were all done I downed 24oz of gatorade and went to lunch with my husband and ate chips/salsa/queso dip :)

Dan so what you are saying is friars will come off us with the wafer but need alcohol to get it off the sink?


Roni thx for info on hollister tail closure. Today I had 2 chocolates and all my output is liquid. Auuugh! Yeah I wish the best of all features were combined in one appliance!

I know it is tough deciding what to eat.

I wear convatec sur-fit natura durahesive convex 2 piece wafer number 413180 precut 7/8 inch. This is day eight with the wafer I am wearing.

Yes, the marshmallow stopped the poo during change and trust me - we were at it for awhile since we had to incise the abcess, drain and pack it THEN put the new pouch on. I ate 3 large marshmallows about 20 min prior to seeing her and beginning the process and I'd say we were at it for a good 30-40minutes. It was GREAT!

thank you allblue for the specifics.......... and rosemary, really? it looks as though its almost covering the stoma? are you still not "feeling the burn" ? lol......so maybe my concerns about not giving the stoma room to output isnt as big of a deal as im thinking? its still coming out and whatever output may be sitting "below" the past and or on/around the intestine hasnt irritated you yet?

i cant wait until my appt with the wocn tomorrow.....i really hope we can figure me out!!!!!!

The Friars comes off with the wafer. No residue.

If you get the Friars on your fingers or the sink you will need alcohol to get it off. Soap and water and bathroom cleaners won't touch it.

ah yes, that is making sense.....i wonder if my new setup will involve paste..it all seems so close quarters in the valley......good luck with the change!!!! im actually already anticipating (and desperately hoping) the wocn getting something to work, and then upon my first change i wont be able to emulate it! ha........

also rosemary, im certain its different everywhere, but when you go to see the wocn is it an official appointment? i know its an appt, but do you go to the hospital? and do you have to have a co-pay? this interests me because on the phone today mine said "come to the hospital main entrance, and youll have to check in but i will let them know you are coming and ill jsut meet you in teh lobby and we'll find an exam room."

Rosemary - the entire time laps from eating marshmallows to having output again was roughly and hour and fifteen minutes.

Roni - just sharing my experience with the WOCN/appt thing - my WOCN is located in the general/vascular/plastic surgery clinic. There are clinic doors that go back to exam rooms for gen surg and off to the right is a door labeled "wound/ostomy" and that is where she is with 2 exam rooms, supply area and her office. My clinic is located in the hospital. She has clinic hours that she sees patients by appointment and she has floor hours where she is out in the hospital seeing inpatients. There is only one of her (and her helper) for the entire hospital and the hospital is the 2nd largest military hospital treating wounded warriors -imagine how many wounds she needs to see just on the inpatient side. There is an entire unit dedicated to burns and last week she was on the unit with patients from 9am until 830p. I know b/c I was waiting to see her and she never came back so I had to leave and then she called me at 830p from her cell and she was on her way home. She is AWESOME like that! My situation is different and unique b/c I am seen my military medicine. We were trying to guesstimate what my bill would have been at a private hospital for my last 10 week stint - I can't even imagine.

YES!!!! I DID IT, I CONQUERED THE BURN!!!!!!!!!!!!

What worked is what the stoma nurse and I put on when I saw her this past week.

1. Cavillon no sting barrier wipe. Right on the burn then a second wipe to shellack the rest of the area that the wafer goes onto. Let dry.
2. Then the Stomahesive paste on the back of the flange around the hole. AND I cut the hole smaller than I have been cutting it.
3. Then the Hollister Convexity flange, push down onto skin with fingers. Then click on the bag.

I left this on from Tues to Friday and the burned area under the stoma, which on Tues was the size of both of my thumbnails put together, is now shrunk to a very tiny "cut" type of thing right under where the poop comes out. This is like a hair line cut type of thing.

AM DOING AN EXPERIMENT NOW: Today I put on my normal flat convatec wafer and bag. I like the convatec bag unrolling SOOO much more than dealing with that tail flap on the Hollister (very hard to open, but I learned from someone how to squeeze it in from the sides but sometimes it does not open.) BUT instead of the eakin seal which I was using with the Convatec flat wafer, I used the stomahesive paste.

I MAY still need the convexity but this little experiment will rule in or out whether the difference was the paste instead of the eakin or whether I really need the convexity.

I plan to change again on Sunday in just two days to see what the results are. OR I may wait til Monday, but at least if the big burn comes back under where the poop comes out I will know how to cure it.

I also sent for some convatec convexity wafers but it seems like they do have a lot harder deeper bowl type shape to them than the hollister which is a bit more subtle. Also the hollister flange tape comes out quite a way on my skin, no issues, but I figure the more skin with something on it, but more can go wrong, BUT each of these systems has their good and their bad features. The small hollister flange is too small for my stoma, darn! As that would be just
the same size as the convatec flange.

ahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!! im back. i missed this place......with my laptop getting stolen, my computer access is limited on teh weekends......AND because of my grandfathers funeral i wasnt at work friday, THEN the holiday monday (i work for a non-profit that follows state holidays), i was a day late........

i too THINK i foudn something that works for me......i ended up seeing the wocn on thursday morning, and what she did is still on and im having minimal irritation....so thats 4 full days, and the end of the day today will make it close to 5, and i think im going to change it tonight because i am getting a little irritation. ive just been so scared to change it lol....

SO, what she did was pretty "old school" i guess.......i did the marshmallow thing before going...she cleaned it up nice......did a thin layer of powder, put an eakin on a hollister convex, and has me wearing an ostomy belt.......and its working! or at least i think because i didnt not feel the burn, and havent still....aside from a tiny bit last night...but maybe thats just my wear time.....

she also is going to get them to send me enough samples to last until my takedown!!! woo hoo!

ps, i just called her, and she said ill let the front desk know you are coming, and i will meet you in teh lobby (of the hospital)....so i did just that, and we went into an exam room and that was that...she even sent me home with a few until the samples came.......and i didnt pay a dime or sign or do any paperwork........good deal!!!!

Glad you found something that works. Yeah, I did the LONG story on the thread you started about anxiety I think. It's that huge long bad story.

You are soooo lucky you get to be taken down. Mine is forever, ah well. Yep I am going 4 days with my hollister convex with the stomahesive paste then going to see what it looks like. Feels good to not have to change every other day, though I like the convatecs a whole lot better. Oh, well. The issue with mine was that the poop was going down under the eakin. It cannot go down under that paste unless maybe I wait too many days? We shall see.

I am supposed to wear the belt too to draw the convex wafer closer to me, but I can't stand it, so am going to try and just have the convexity be enough. Hope I can lose this weight.

I am seeing if the new hollister convexity will work on me for 4 days. I change tomorrow a.m. We shall see if this worked. Last time I tried it 3 days and it was great. Then I tried my old non-convex convatec and it worked almost as well (only a two day trial), but this was great not having to change every other day. That was getting old.

If the burn is very tiny tomorrow as it was after my first trial with the hollister convexity, I guess I will stick with this until I lose that weight.

I had Tuna at D'Angelo's today to try it again. AND IT GAVE ME DIARRHEA AGAIN! Must be the mayo. Seems to have quieted after eating 2 little tubs of baby food bananas. This is awful having to eat to control poop, I mean give me a break! But you gotta do what you gotta do. At least I found out the hollister holds up under TUNA DIARRHEA! So to quiet the tuna diarrhea I had two little containers of baby food banana. THEN to thin that down I had to have grape juice and coconut water. YUCK!

Tomorrow I am back to rice cereal, yogurt, lots of water and hot decaf coffee, and egg and a bun. Boring diet but what works is always preferable. Rosemary
