Sometimes my output is thin and sometimes thick. I never worry abot consistency. How do you know that you are having diarrhea?

Hi dan, ileostomy diarrhea for me is a bag or multiple bags of clear yellow effluent from either a virus, foreign tap water, fake suagr, or from the mayo on d'angelo's tuna sandwiches.

LOL!! I know, what is it about their mayo? Or is it the oil in the tuna fish? I can have mayo on eggs for egg salad with no issue and plain poached salmon if it is REALLY tender, but am not sure what is up with the D'Angelo's tuna mayo.

RONI- The burn is back even with the convex hollister and the stomahesive paste instead of the eakin. For today I just went back to my old convatec flat system as the flange on the hollister comes out so far and irritated some skin. I am asking Dan about that Friars. I am getting desparate enough to try some.

Hi Dan,

What I'm asking is if I put the Friar's tincture of benzoine on the burn on the skin just under my stoma, will it sting at first, then feel OK, then at my next bag change will the burn be gone?

Also, would I put the Friar's on the burn, let it dry, then put on Stomahesive paste, then the wafer?

Will it sting....absolutely! But not for long. If possible I would clean the wafer area with only water and pieces of paper towel. Then dry with a hair dryer. Apply the Friars with a q-tip. Just one coat on the entire wafer area. Be sure to coat right up to your stoma and on the sides of your stoma. It does not sting on the stoma. Dry again. Then put the wafer on. I would not use anything else, just friiars. If it is not completely healed on the next change it will sting again.

Dan,

I only want to put the Friar's on the burn just under the spout of the stoma. I want to use my normal prep wipe on the rest of the area that the wafer goes on. I figure with the rest of the area why tamper with success of my normal prep wipe.

As the Friars would only be on the tiny little burned area right under the stoma spout would I then put the stomahesive paste around the hole in the wafer to protect the rest of the skin, around the stoma, you know that little 1/8th of an inch between wafer and the stoma.

OR instead of the paste to protect the rest of the skin around the stoma, would I paint a little ring of friar's right around the whole stoma then skip the paste?

Not sure why you put the friars on the whole back of the wafer if the wafer is already sticking fine. Am just trying to wrap my head around this. Thanks, Rosemary

At first I just put friars just around my stoma. Since it protects my skin like a skin barrier wipe I started covering the whole wafer area. Works just fine. Comes off clean with the wafer. Don't need adhesive removers to clean the area and leave a residue.

At least apply friars all around your stoma and leave out the paste.

Your last paragraph sounds like you are going to put friars on the wafer. Apply it to your skin not the wafer.

OK Dan thanks. I got it now. I just may at least try that Friar's around the stoma and leave out the paste as you say the friars acts like a skin barrier. That would make sense. we shall see. Rosemary

Put some on the back of your hand and let it dry. You will see that it is quite durable and sticky. You will need alcohol to get it off.

Dan I did a test patch of the Friars on another part of my skin and I see what you mean, it makes like a film on the skin and dries quickly also smells really nice! I noticed on the bottle it says how to use it for an inhalant I can see why.

Tried your experiment with friars. Shaved a little area of the underside of my forearm. Applied friars and took a shower. Still a little sticky. Put on a piece of hypafix medical tape. After some hours I tried to pull it off. It came off my bare arm but not the friars area. I could have pulled the skin off. I had to soak it in alcohol to get the tape off.

OK thanks for update. I ended up not even doing the bag change this a.m. as I needed a day off from "all this crap" PUN INTENDED! hehehehe! The friars I put on the back of my hand last night just came off with soap and water. But likely on a belly would be different. Rosemary

P.S. I just ate a vanilla cream donut at dunkins. YIKES! These are slow to get rid of. Gotta go walking an drink a LOT!

Does the friars bottle say "Friars Balsam Compound Benzoin Tincure"? I don't understand why it came off with soap and water. I am going to try leaving it on my arm overnight.

Hi Dan, Yep the bottle says all of that which you spelled out above.

Tomorrow I will do a change and see how big my burn got leaving my appliance on 2 days instead of one. I get so tired of this whole gig I just had to take the day off. BUT tomorrow I will follow up on the burn issue. I don't think even if my weight got back down to 99 that my stomach would be as flat as it was. I have no clue what I'm going to do on the long term. Ah well, tomorrow is another day.

I left it on overnight. Still some left after washing and later a shower.

Are you going to try it on your stoma tomorrow? Doesn't sound like it could be any worse than what you are doing now.

I don't remember, do you wear flat or convex?

Hi Dan,

OK I changed my appliance this a.m. and MUCH to my surprise the burn was MUCH better. Much smaller in diameter but more like the little cut type thing it turns into when it shrinks in diameter.

AND this miracle occurred using my normal flat Convatec Stomahesive wafer and bag. And I went 2 days in between bag changes instead of just one. YEAH!
What I did last time that was different was I did the cavillon no sting barrier film and the stomahesive powder and then the stomahesive paste.

The real offender issue was those eakin seals which do not adhere as they once did and the paste obviously does. So that was a BIG help!

So seeing as this really helped I did the same routine I did this time. The friars I tried on my hand did make a film but really think I would need the paste too as the liquid output from the stoma I think would eat right through that friars. If soap and water takes the friars off then I am sure digestive juices would.

BUT next time I may try the friars on the burn then all the other stuff too. I will just keep experimenting. The weight loss thing is really plateauing at 129. I don't know if I will ever be able to lose 10 more lbs. Rosemary

Soap and water does not take friars off. I still have it on my arm from yesterday. I use no body powders or oils on my arms.

well i have survived through some changes, and mines not nearly as bad as it was, though like you said still a little bit.....the system i have, i think i am going to stick with, as the irritation is very minor....good luck to you Rosemary, i hope you continue to be able to control yours...hopefully maybe even better than i am with mine!
