Hi everyone:

Well welcome to the world of leaks, I experienced a big one the other night and again today, it looks like I have been changing my wafer EVERY Day since I got home. My home ostomy nurse said it's not unusal, you are going through a learning curve, before you know it, it will be old hat. She said all systems are not perfect, but you will find your way.

When my home ostomy nurse came yesterday, she thought my stoma was a littler darker red and not as pink as the previous day, and it has some puss around it, she called my colon surgeon and he didn't think it was aything. He is seeing me on Monday to take out stiches and look at my stoma. Has anyone experienced this? Is it too soon to really now, since surgery was only 10 days ago? I've read online about some stoma's having poor oxygen supply and need to be revised? Can anyone help me with this. I am not going to get crazy because I believe the worst surgery is behind me; 7 hours in the OR....

PS I was up moving about today, my husband told me I need to rest, but I have a false sense of energy because of the prednisone - tomorrow down to 15mg, can't wait!

Necrosis is when there is poor blood supply and the stoma can turn black I heard. It is really extreme. Do keep an eye and good that you have a soon appointment. They do watch for this the first few weeks post op. Hopefully this will be nothing. Good luck, Rosemary

I don't think it would be redder with poor oxygen supply, that doesn't sound right....

Are you measuring your stoma frequently? It changes size a lot at first, and that can be an issue w/leaking. And yes, you are in the club, we've all had leaks -- in a way it's important to know that they happen, and the world doesn't end, and you just move on. Your nurse is right, there is a learning curve. And like a lot of things, the task itself is harder in the beginning ....gets easier when the stoma settles down.

Hang in. And feel free to ask more specific questions here. I had some leaking problems at first that were from using too much powder -- the wafer didn't stick right.... if you write exactly what you're doing ,we may have suggestions.

My Stella gets the red you are describing when I am changing a lot due to leaks/"messing around" with her a lot. Since I changed systems she has been a nice girly pink color :)

And yes, you are in the club! I have had my share of accidents since my surgery Dec 15 and thankfully only one of them happened outside our home or the hospital and I was able to contain it with no one knowing any different. It feels so great to finally be in a system that gives confidence - I was becoming a prisoner in my own home. You will get the hang of it - I am still learning too! I know this system will not be the "one" for me but it is working now and that is all I care about!

Yes the swelling in my stomach is going down, and the stoma is already shrinking. The hospital said all paitents go out of the hospital with a size 45. My CR also said that my stoma will shrink a lot, so maybe that's why I am leaking alot! I have changed EVERYDAY since I got home and my skin under the wafer is getting sensitive. The first time my husband and I did it, it took about 1 hours, we were both so nervous, then I got up to walk with it not covered, wasn't a good idea, we have a carpet cleaner coming tomorrow. I had to change the wafer again yesterday and we did it very carefully in 30 mins. No leaks so far...YEA!

During this whole time of illness and surgery for the last 4 years, my husband keep saying, " I want my old Renee back again", he said this morning I can see her coming back little by little. Thank God!

You can get your life back from this surgery -- it's really amazing.

I learned pretty quickly to move the rugs in the bathroom when changing if it's likely to leak.... right out of the hospital I had a leak and then went in the bathroom and just had poop spurting everywhere -- and I couldn't bend. My mom was helping me, and she had to clean up after me, no way I could do it myself.... had been about 45 years since she'd cleaned up one of my accidents LOL.... but she did it and it wasn't that big a deal (and I think that shooting out thing was only a post surgery thing, hasn't happened again like that).

You might want to post exactly what you're doing. I was having a lot of leaks and did that and people gave me some good tips.

No, I don't have the equipment for that anymore LOL!  I was just meaning that my WOCN switched me over to the convex with a belt that was helping so much and that down the road I am sure I will change to something different once all my healing is done.  Sorry for any confusion :)
