j pouch on ultrasound?

Ok, so I had to have an ultrasound done for my yearly exam today. The ultrasound tech tells me that my bladder was full and that I needed to go to the bathroom. I didn't really need to go, but she said it was really full and would complicate the procedure. I went and I did go a little bit but not alot considering I didn't really need to go. So I get back to the room and she starts again and says, "you didn't empty your bladder". At this point I was thinking "ok, what the heck is going on?" All of a sudden I though "ah, its the j-pouch" so I proceeded to tell her about it. She had no idea what it was. She said it was just the same shape and size as my bladder and where my bladder would be located. She also kept talking about it being full of liquid. I'm kinda freaked by the experience because I don't feel like I need to empty the pouch. I still have the temp loop ileo as well. Is it normal to be full of fluid and not have to go? All that being said, should I be worried or concerned about any of this? Eeekkk!!!!

It's probably your jpouch. If you want reassurance, talk with your CR surgeon and explain the story. I've heard some crazy stories over the past few years from jpouchers. One ER doctor told a jpouch patient that her small intestine was wrapped around her heart, another had an ER doctor tell her that she had no small intestine. One would expect they could figure these things out, but we are walking anomaly.

Geeze, sounds like time for some professional development for the ultrasound techs -- at least learn to say nothing when they don't know what they're talking about....

I'm not sure how a j pouch and bladder compare in size, but "full of liquid" probably meant in relation to how a bladder looks on an ultrasound when it's full.... not sure whether the j pouch is angled the same way etc.... might not have had that much in it.

But Sue's right, check in w/your surgeon if you are still concerned.

It is really wild how our insides look compared to the norm! I was amazed when I saw the pics during my gastrografin enema imaging pre-takedown. I told the radiologist, "There's nothing in there!". He just laughed and told me there was something in there, it's just different than it used to be. I would agree that the pouch is located in the vicinity of the bladder, I don't know anything about it looking like it's full of liquid though. I'm wondering if being coated with mucous might look the same on the scan? I wouldn't worry too much. She was probably just seeing something new for the first time and didn't know how to analyze it!

That reminds me, I want to ask my surgeon what percentage of a given urban population has a jpouch or an ostomy. It does seem strange to ne that an er tech had no idea what she was seeing.

Ha! I had an ER doctor ask me, "So, how do you pee?" in response to my explaining the j-pouch and temp ileo to him. I just stared at this for a minute because I couldn't believe he was really asking that!

I thought people with jpouches have to pee through their belly-buttons.

I did think it was weird how she had no idea what it was. I kinda thought the same as you bluegrass.....like uh how do you get something like that mixed up? and even after I explained it she still seemed confused lol. I did tell my pcp about it today and she also thought that maybe she hasn't ever had someone with one.
