Saw the CR surgeon today

Yes I'm heading for surgery again...CT showed lefthandside colitis in my dis functioned colon, this week the pain and fevers were back. Too many drugs have failed, and as I never had small bowl crohn-touch wood-I may be able to rid myself of this dd with the proctocolectomy. Was a bit taken aback to hear that I. Can't have any children afterwards, which I wasn't aware of. We have one boy and weren't planning to have anymore, but to have the option taken away from you, is a bit of a shocker.
Now it's just waiting for the date, in the next 1-2 months. Bit anxious about the recovery after surgery, didn't do well with all the pain mess they made me vomit every morning, and I fainted from the anti-nausea drug. Once I was just on paracetamol, I was doing fine. I guess a should meet up with my stoma nurse to talk through this butt wound...anxious and nervous.

Do you have other health concerns that would interfere with your desire to have more children? Many people have children after a proctocolectomy - either with a permanent ileostomy or a j-pouch.

Hi i would like to say that after my ileostomy was made permanent i went on and had a little girl shes 2yrs old now,I know that they say with surgery that you might have problems conceiving afterwards.

No, I haven't. But the surgeon kind of said that by removing the rectum you more or less are infertile. Maybe he was talking about the worst case...

I had mine removed in july 08 and by may 09 i was pregnant.

Im Irish 36 yr old woman I had my first op nearly six years ago, Look they have to tell you that for legal reasons but dont take it for gospel, you wont know until you try, so i would wait and see and if you really want a baby when you have recovered then you should try and see what happens.

oh my... so sorry to hear that you're heading for more surgery :-(

give yourself time to get your head around the surgery and all that entails and take it a step at a time. I know exactly what you mean about the medication though and all the nausea etc. I fainted with an antinausea injection too.. there are different options and I got on better with other varieties (can't remember the name). Just tell the nurses that's what happened before and hopefully they'll find different options.

hopefully this will be the end of it for you but am sure you must be feeling very anxious.. deep breath

I'm pretty sure I'll end up the same way, just trying to put off the inevitable as long as possible. I'm sure I have the start of diversion colitis but am trying to ignore it

I'm so sorry that the Crohn's has reared its ugly head again! sad I had Crohn's in my large intestine and rectum, too, and having a proctocolectomy was the best thing I've ever done for my health. My surgery was 6 years ago and I've been disease-free ever since. So, there's hope that you'll soon be disease-free, too! :-)

My surgeon never said anything about the possibility of being infertile after having my rectum removed. I still had periods after surgery (went through menopause last year), which makes me think that I could have gotten pregnant if my husband and I had wanted to. I suppose they have to expose all possible side effects, just to protect themselves.

Since the pain meds made you sick after your last surgery, I wonder if an epidural would be a better post-op pain relief option for you? Some people here have had that form of pain relief and can hopefully weigh in on how it worked for them.

Please keep us posted on when your surgery will be and feel free to ask any questions you may have about it.

Thanks for all your replies. I'm slowly getting my head around this now. I will be having the operation at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, or more accurate at the Churchill Hospital, which is part of the JR and all elective durgery is done there. all the stoma nurses are located there too, so at least I'll know some friendly faces.

yes i will be having an epidural, but I think that made me sick in recovery of my temp ileo as well as during my c-section.

well this shall pass too!

Dreading Monday though when I have to tell my bosses at work. I hate taking time off sick, it makes me feel really guilty!

Work is really good and forthcoming anyway, but in my place there are not many females at my level and I always think that I have too prove myself. Just worry about my carreeer/job-probably unnecessary. Priority is I need to get better and healthier.
