i will have had my ileostomy (temporary but will not change back) 1-yr on May 10.i have been concerned that what will happen as the stool (that bypasses the ileostomy) backs up sooner or later what will happen. This was a worry of my Gastroenterologist when it came to me needing my colonoscopy...However, it has happened now. i am impacted horribly (enemas have done nothing). Nothing will remove it as i have no muscles 2 even push at all. 7-live births, hysterectomy & bladder lift; then all my internal stuff-Colon broke thru the wall into the vagina where my colon, vagina & bladder fell out of my body.

I'm SCARED, WORRIED AT WHAT CAN BE DONE AT THIS POINT?  The last time i saw the surgeon that performed my ileostomy was 3-mths after in which he said he didn't need 2 see me ever again unless i had problems down the road. i thought that was very strange 2 never see me again.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think its strange that the surgeon never needed to see you again, mine said the same thing.
As for the problem, I'm not sure I understand. So you still have stool that's supposed to come out the regular way? But it doesn't? Can they remove it surgically? It sounds horribly painful, I hope you get fixed up!

Hi My gastro doc said the same, and like you i thought it was strange, but you can always ring and make an appointment if you have a problem.

I'm pretty new to ostomies so I didn't know that stuff can bypass the ileostomy and go into the colon. I'm so sorry you have to deal with all this.

My husband is 2.5 wks post-op, but has seen his surgeon and has another appt to meet her in 4 wks. He wasn't' completely sewn shut after his surgery and still has 2 open wounds to take care of, so that could be why. After previous surgeries where he was completely closed up, he didn't have follow-up appts with the surgeon, but had to see his GI doc frequently.

I'm assuming you have a loop ileo, so some stool can get past it, correct? Do you still have your rectum?

One solution would be to get it changed to an end ileo, then there's no way for the stool to bypass the ileo. I'm not sure how this would be for you with your other surgeries, but I'd imagine that it's a simple surgery, as it would take place mostly near the surface, just changing up which part of the intestine is sticking out. Certainly would be worth a surgical consult to talk about that.... if you originally intended the ileo to be temporary, but have changed your mind, then it makes sense to get an ileo designed to be permanent.

But perhaps w/all your other surgeries and issues it's not worth it.... but it sounds like it might be.

You are having a problem now, sounds like time to make an appointment. Hope things get better soon.

Yep I was just going to say that this must be a loop ileo if poop is slipping down the back limb into the colon. That would be an issue. Yikes!

My surgeon did an end ileo to avoid this complication as my colon and rectum were totally scarred from that GYN surgery that got me into this whole mess.

BUT now I have what seems to be a stricture at the base of the end ileostomy. That is a risk of end ileos (3-10%). So what is good in one way is bad in another. Good luck with this.

Also in my colon I still own but is completely bypassed, turns out I have a huge mucous collection in my cecum that is now inflammed and I have some old retained stool from when I did the prep the night before the ileostomy 4 years ago. I was like how the heck did that get in there if it was not on my CT scan of 2010. I don't think they can go up with a scope and get the inflamming cecum mucous as the walls of my unused colon are so friable and would bleed so easily. I have no clue what they will do if this mucous ever perforates the colon or if infection sets in. VERY bad situation. Then whatever is giving me partial sbo's who knows? I think that is why nobody is doing anything. Today I was in a LOT of pain.

I have an end ileo as my colon developed diverting colitis and i knew i did not want to go the other way anymore so my surgeon removed my colon then i got a stricture in my colon had that fixed now so far almost a month out no more probs. i have 7 kidos too similar situation to you. I suggest that you go see the surgeon and see what he says i am finally on the mends and feeling better with each passing day...DEBBI
