hi. my baby girl's birthday party is sunday and i want to make some dips etc...
but if i can't eat them, i won't make them.

are either of these foods are bad or will cause a blockage please...

artichoke hearts chopped up and then baked.
poppy seeds that are in toasted bagel chips
sun dried tomatoes if i peel off the skin

evveryone is different as they all say, but the way i see it, the bagel chips should be fine...poppy seeds are too small to cause a problem if you ask me....they will jusst come out whole....(even if im wrong, i can tell you, from personal experience that ive been fine with poppy and sesame seeds.)

i feel like the tomatoes shoud be fine also.

me personally though, i would stay away from the artichoke hearts unless they are REALLY chopped small and definitely cooked....they may be fine, but i myself would probably stay away from them... just my 2 cents.

I think the tomatos without the peels, will be fine. I don't know what the consistency of artichokes are, so I can't speak to that. I wouldn't eat the seeds, not only because they look really gross coming out, but because they can get stuck in the sides of your intestines or they can ball up and get stuck. How big are the seeds? If they are in chips and kind of ground up they. Might be ok

Remind me how far out from surgery you are? For me personally - it was best to keep things basic and bland for the first 6 or so weeks, the rule I followed was if I couldn't eat it before surgery I didn't eat it in those 6 weeks after surgery :)

my surgery was march 22nd. and so far i have been very good with food. but i thought i saw someone the other day say artichoke was bad but not sure cuz i still have baby brain and can't remember anything.
just want to double check before i eat it as i will NOT have a blockage and go through any of the pain and suffering i read about with blockages. no way jose!

hence my question! :-)

If the dips are pureed well you should have no problem. Hubby and I went to lunch yesterday. There was a cream of vegetable soup he ordered which I was nervous about...all the veggies were pureed and it was nice and thick and full of flavor and delicious.

He definitely avoids the skin things too. However a few times at home when I have seedless grapes around and he feels like experiencing them he will slowly eat them and spit out the skin. At least he isn't totally deprived and gets to have some even in this limited way than never to eat them again.

We thought hot dogs were a thing of the past. Even though we do not eat them often at all....I found that the Kayem brand with natural casings do not have that toughness about them so we have them every once in awhile.

We too are very careful and pro active to try to keep blockages away especially from food type things that are in our control.

i wasnt aware that the seeds could get stuck so to speak...i envision a clogged artery with things just building up, lol......like i said though, i never had a problem....and never had a problem with sesame either, which are bigger than poppy...tehy just come out whole, thats all.........i again will tell you that personally, i am afraid of artichokes/hearts.....i put those as even worse than uncooked carrots.

cool thanks. but bummer cuz the dip i make is sooooooooo dee-lish-us!!!! im not gonna make it now cuz there is no way that i can look at it without eating it!!!
uncooked carrots? good thing i don't like them, but why are they bad? do they stay chunky or something?

I have tried all of those foods with no problems. I think I am in the camp who does get blockages too - I had a blockage a week ago on mango. Needless to say I am not eating any raw fruits and veggies unless they are in puree or juice form.

We are all different. Some can eat almost anything at all with no problems. One food I never plan to try, especially now, is popcorn.

Hi kazygirl, I havent had any prob with raw or cooked fruit and veg, I have my ileostomy nearly six years, but as uc_free said we are all different, try your dip, you wont know unless you try. hope this helps.

kazy, if everything is pureed and the dip is smooth, you can def eat it.
I made a pasta sauce out of pureed artichoke hearts.
I even did fine with grated carrots.
I ate a salad about 2 weeks after my colectomy and was fine, because I didn't know I wasn't supposed to eat it.
But I didn't really have vegies back in my diet until after 2 months or so. All in all, I never had a blockage, not from lots of nuts, not from marzipan, not from tomato skins. (I was also alwys telling my stoma how great it is!)

The point is: yes, you can eat everything. But slowly, very slowly. Not all at once, tried small amounts at first.

I eat everything, haven't had any issues. I feared raw veggies at first, but eat them now. I make sure I really chew and lots of water! I put nuts in my salads, keep skins on veggies, I eat salads practically every day. I have small kids, they love popcorn and after I got over that fear, I will have some but again, make sure it's really popped and chew well. You are quite new post op, so if you want to play it safe and better safe than sorry....do what you think is best!

I personally love to eat, can't turn my nose to anything. But I did go slow post op, trying small amounts, seeing what I could eat, getting over the fear too!

And....Happy Birthday to your daughter!!

since its only been a month you might want to play it a little safe. But one thing that helps me is if i eat popcorn, if i eat a piece of bread too i never have a problem. the one time out of probably 50 bags of popcorn i didn't, it got all stuck up! and the only other thing that has bothered me are fried mozeralla sticks, maybe because its so stringy?
carrots don't bother me, i just cant stand to see them come out! it's gross, lol.

omg lol. carrots coming back out. eewww.

the artichokes are NOT pureed. they are roughly chopped like the onions. its chunky.
i will play it safe cuz i do NOT want any issues.
i can wait. but everyone else will have to wait too, cuz there is no way on earth that i can make that and NOT eat it. LOL

it funny cuz i have been cutting up all the nibblies for the party and you can tell what stuff is for me cuz there is no skins. i even cut the skins off my kabana sausages hahahaha.

i saw someone mentioned marzipan. that better not be a no-no cuz then i will surely die! LOl

Marzipan is supposed to be a no-no because the stuff clumps together in your itestine and could cause a blockage. If you eat some, drink lots and lots of hot tea with it, and eat it with other things.
One night, while I had a stoma, I ate marzipan, and the next day my output was so thick that it didn't fall into the bag, it pancaked on top of the stoma and made my bag leak. In retrospect it is really not such a big deal.
