Abcess

I had my reversal surgery 16 days ago. Everything seemed to go well, but after I got home from the hospital, my pain started to get worse. Over the weekend I was getting stabbing pains that would stop me in my tracks. While in the hospital I barely took any painkillers, but on Monday I took 2 percocet and it didn't even touch the pain. I hadn't been running a fever at all, but late Monday afternoon it was 39 so I decided I should head to the ER.

After my 5th CT scan in 5 months they discovered an abcess at the anastomosis. They said it was too small to drain so I have been on IV antibiotics for a couple days. Haven't had to take any pain meds and haven't had a fever at all in hospital. Plan is to switch to oral meds and go home in a couple days.

Has anyone else had an experience like this. I'm worried the antibiotics won't do the trick and I could have further complications. I also don't want anymore CT scans.

I have had several that we're treated differently. They did IV anti for one, drains for several and oral anti for another. I can say that for me they all did their job. Just watch how you are feeling...if you lose your appetite, have pain or any other not normal feeling call you doc.

I just found out that I actually still have a few "pockets of fluid" in my abdomen (my last surgery was in 2008) but they aren't causing any problems...my doc said that sometimes we have internal scars, too.

I also experienced an abscess after surgery in the pelvic area. The first time it was large enouhg to drain along with antibiotic treatment. The it came back. Too small for a drain and they put me on a double antibiotic dose. Rather have the IV. Those antibiotic made me so sick on the 14 day! It wasn't until I got the antibiotics out of my system and my muscles stop aching that I can tell the abscess must be gone...but it appears the infection moved to my anus. My butt hole is now sore!

My father had three abscesses. The first was immediately after his illeostomy and this had to be operated on to remove. The second one was treated with antibiotics and thankfully went away. The third was treated with antibiotics AND he had to have a tube inserted into his directly into the abscess to drain it. It remained for about a week at which point it was yanked out by the surgeon. No more abscesses since then.
