Ok. I was first experience an abscess in my pelvic area. After 14 days of double antibiotic treatment I have pain at the end of my anus. I saw a dr and screamed when she placed a small finger in there. Then screamed louder when she tried with a scope. My anus isnt sewed shut. There's no leakage. I got orders for a CT scan as she said there may e a small abscess. On the other hand she said maybe I was misdiagnosed and I actually have crohnes and not UC. Ugh!

Has anyone had pain in this area after surgery and what was the cause?

I had a perianal abcess before surgery. The pain is horrid! It did not respond to antibiotics and had to be surgically drained. An outpatient procedure that is quick but painful. Recovery was very fast though.
GIs kept saying it might be Crohn's but the surgeon said it was definitely uc. Some people with uc do get abcesses.

I had an abscess after my first takedown that had to be drained surgically, but came back a few months later, and was drained without actual surgery. I know the pain you mean. I got a CT scan both times with contrast, and the second time they couldn't put the "rectal" contrast in me because I cried so much. I think my abscesses were a little further up than my anus, though. (I also had an abscess behind one of my incisions a couple of months after my second takedown this past May that I had a drain put in for... it was really bizarre, my surgeon admitted he really doesn't know how it happened since that particular incision had been healed up since March.) Anyway, I am a UC patient, and have not had anymore issues with abscesses since the last one was drained. Hoping you are doing better soon!! Hang in there! It's frustrating but you will get past it.

Peace... first I think your doctor is cruel. Why the heck would she try to stuff a scope up there if you were in intense pain just from her finger? It sure sounds like you have some kind of abscess brewing.  I have had multiple abscesses in my ex-anal area after my jpouch excision surgery. My doc too left the backside open to heal and for the wounds to drain. I am having my 6th EUA surgery in a few weeks to keep the wound open and draining. I also had a CT guided drainage. As a result of these abscesses, I currently have a 5" long sinus tract from where the actually jpouch was removed which has not healed.  And I actually had a mushroom catheter huge tube placed way up in that area and sticking out my bottom for two months, again to keep the wound open and draining. My surgery was eight months ago.

See the thing is.. if you have an abscess, it may have closed itself off, so it can't drain. That can cause excruciating pain. You want that wound draining. Fortunately, my surgeon, knows his stuff, and he has never once tried to touch that area unless I was under anesthesia. I don't believe a post surgery abscess in that area is any sign of crohn's disease. I have never heard of such a thing. The anal area can be difficult to heal, abscesses can form, and things may not fully heal for a long long time. Seems like you definitely need a CT scan to hunt for abscesses. And then if they find one, they have to figure out the best way to get in there and drain it - whether its cutting back up in there or doing a CT guided drainage. Also antibiotics generally won't do squat for an abscess unless the abscess is open and draining. It has to be open for the antibiotics to get to it.

Whatever you do, don't let that lady doctor touch you unless she has you knocked out under full anesthesia in an operating room! I trust you have a good colorectal surgeon dealing with this? If not, you need to.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I do hope they find an abscess.  It certainily didn't hurt there a couple weeks ago! Unfiortunately due to the holiday My CT Scan isn't until next Monday and since it takes 3 days to get the records I have to wait until the following week to see my surgeon. Alto can happen in 2 weeks!

It was such a shock hear...oh maybe it's Crohn's...especially after everything I've been through! She said about 10% UC paienets are misdiagnosed...plus my cousin on my dad's side of the family had Crohn's. She's the only one in the family and I thought cousins didn't count when it come to genes for this! In fact I have a gene test done and testing high for RA and extrememly low for UC and CD!  However that's only shows the maternal side. There's no one living on my dad's side to be tested.

peace.. if you are in a lot of pain... you can go to the ER and get a cat scan done and read immediately. All you would have to do is tell them you just had major surgery, you are in an unusual amount of new pain, and there is suspicion of an abscess. Also where are you at, that your surgeon can't see the cat scan right away. very strange. If its not at a facility your surgeon is associated with, you can just have the thing put on a CD and bring it to your surgeon for immediate reading.

seriously.. I really wouldn't suspect crohns as this point in time. Seems like its just a post-surgical abscess which is very common.

     I thought you were seeing Dr. Fry yesterday.  When I had "issues" post surgery, he sent me for an MRI of the stomach and pelvic area.  Well, unfortunately, I went to a very inept facility for the MRI.  First of all, they never told me I should fast for the procedure and they SHOULD have.  I was under that imaging machine for over an hour.  The tech then had the nerve to holler..."Are you moving?"   NO...I didn't move a bit, although my arms were numb from holding them above my head and I could feel extensive gurgling of my upper intestinal tract and my bag felt like it was in high gear.  Long story short, they only did the MRI of the stomach!!!  They couldn't find a vein to insert the contrast.  After them sticking me a half dozen times, I jumped off the table, told them "This is IT...I am outta here!"  When Dr. Fry received their report, it stated..."Results, inconclusive.  A recommendation for a CT scan of the rectum is advised."  WHAAAAA???  Dr. Fry looked confused and said..."How the heck are you going to have a CT scan of the rectum when you have no rectum?"  OY...sometimes ya wonder.

     It hurt like the dickens when Dr. Fry stuck that anuscope up my butt and suctioned out the hematoma.  I almost asked the nurse if they were ****'s.  Apparently, they have no anesthesia to perform office procedures.  For me to have anesthesia, I would have had to go into Pennsylvania Hospital to have it done.  So, I just bit the bullet.  Thank God it was only a one shot deal.  The antibiotics took care of the healing part.  Keeping fingers crossed I never get another abscess, but I guess it isn't impossible for them to form.

     about having Crohn's...how long were you treated by your GI doctor for UC?  My GI doctor treated me for twelve years for UP.  I had many, many colonoscopies and not a one revealed Crohns.  So when my GI doctor had a hissy fit that I had decided on surgery, he said to me..."What if the ulcerations develop in your small intestine?"  with a smirk on his face.  I said, "Well, then, I would suppose you misdiagnosed me and were treating me for the wrong disease for twelve years."  With a smirk on my face.  I believe he was once sued and I don't think he relished the thought of another law suit, so he just walked away.

     I do hope you have relief soon.  This is sooo agonizing, I know.

oh yes and since you are most likely having a CT with contrast don't freak if they put the contrast in the IV and then also try to enema up the contrast. I am convinced there must not be radiolology codes for pelvic CT with contrast but with no rectal contrast. Twice now...in a major top notch hospital where I had surgery done, I have gone in for the CT and see the nice enema there and they look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them they can't do the rectal contrast as I have no rectum. Then they have to run out to get the head radiologist and call the surgeon. Once was just 5 days after surgery to rip it all out. You think they would know better.

Interesting posts! Had plenty of CT scans done with out enemas..thank God! My follow up appt is for next Tues. So far it seems to be working it ways out. I'm finally having some discharge from my anus but only with the help of a tampon!

Yea..the scope sounds nasty and I just may be getting that done too!

I only had UC for 2 years and switch between many GIs. I also had a work up done at Mayo Clinic. They were also sure it was UC.
