I had colorectal cancer about 6 years ago with complete removal of rectum and a colostomy.  Although I am happy to be cancer free, I have had problems with a growing

parastomal hernia over the past 2  years.  Initially my surgeon said she didn't want' to do anything since they can be difficult to fix.  I moved to a new area and have seen a new oncologist and surgeon who say it has become bigger and should be repaired now.  My surgeon says he can do it with laparoscopy surgery and mesh repair.  I have read some concerning information about these types of repairs and often patients have to have the colostomy site changed to the other side.  Any info/experience would be helpful.

I got an incisional hernia near my belly button last year. It was along the incision from my colon removal. The surgeon recommended the mesh and told me without it I had a high chance of getting another one there. I was a little learly but we did go the mesh route and everything went fine. It feels weird after surgery because you can tell the mesh is in there but 3 or 4 weeks it had completely adhered and I felt completely normal. Good luck.

I also had a number of hernias as a result of three open surgeries. I had them repaired laproscopically with mesh and have not had any problems since. As scrap girl says, I was aware of it at first, but that passed quickly.

I have an ileostomy, it will be 3 years in June. I have recently had testing and my small intestine is enlarged. about an inch to the right of my stoma and a little lower I have a tugging pain that is becoming painful at times. My test results are not in, but thanks to a wonderful surgeon that I know, he has promised he would have all of my test results in the morning and do whatever needs to be done to get me better. From everything I read, I feel like I may have a hernia too. Could you see yours? I can't see one on me.

I could see and feel the two large ones, but I also had several small ones that I could not see. I think that you wouldn't necessarily see small ones.
