post ng tube question

I did not have that happen with my nostril, but I have to tell you that NG tube is the worst thing I have ever had happen to me, as well.

With 2 natural childbirth deliveries [probably wouldn't do it that way now, though  ] and my 2 major open abdominal surgeries within 13 months of each other...the NG tube was hands-down the worst.   I developed Ileus after my 2nd surgery last July and needed one for a mere day and a half and thought I would die.

I thought it was in wrong...HA!  Now, after reading of others' experiences I know that is just the nature of the beast.  My throat hurt so bad and every time I finally would drop off to sleep with it, I would have to swallow and wake right back up.

     I agree....not the most pleasant experience.  I ate too soon (at the suggestion of one of the surgical residents who wanted as many patients as possible cleared out for the 4th of July holiday) and BOY did I ever pay.  Everything and I mean EVERYTHING came up, plus ton of bile..ugh...all over my bed.  I never saw nurses work so fast at cleaning anyone up..lol.  My surgeon just happened to be on the floor, came in to see me, and said..."Hate to tell you this, but you are only going to continue vomiting if we don't place the ng tube back down."  I didn't fight it, just rolled with the punches and swallowed the water when they told me to swallow.  Have to mention that my surgeon was not too happy with the senior resident.  She came in my room with my surgeon with her tail between her legs as my surgeon said, "Don't let ANYONE tell you when you can eat.  Let your body tell you when it is time."  I know he said that for her benefit.  Needless to say, that ng tube stayed down there and did its job for three days!  I felt sooo much better once it was down there though.  Brought up two huge viles full of bile.  Oh...I was in the hospital till July 9th...so the senior resident had to see me over the 4th of July weekend.  But, she was as sweet as pie to me..lol.

     No, to answer your direct question. The ng tube did not affect my nostrils at all.  You must have a tiny nose.

     The worse thing that happened to me took place three days after the ng tube worked its way out.  The nurse was taking night time vitals.  She couldn't get a reading on my BP.  All I remember is feeling very cold that entire day.  I had my hubby ask for extra blankets for me before he left.  I must have had seven blankets on.  My roommate was HOT and couldn't figure out why I felt so cold.  I was also extremely tired and wanted to sleep.  The nurse had to find one of the old fashioned BP cuffs.  My BP was 70/40, pulse 152 and temp of 105.  All hell broke loose.  Doctor on duty came running in...stat this, stat that.  All I wanted to do was sleep..lol.  They wouldn't let me sleep.  They took blood cultures, xrays, set up IV's, took me to the CTscan lab....you name it, they did it.  Till this day, it is still a mystery.  The following day I was fine!  My surgeon said I gave them all a scare.  All my tests came back negative.  The nurse said I had signs of sepsis.    Thank God I was still in the hospital.  They must have done something right because I am here to talk about it....SCARY!
