illeostomy surgery 4 weeks on.. No can wee

Hi all, I'm about 4 weeks after having my colon removed and don't feel too bad however I do have a problem, when they took my catheter out in hospital I had to pee a couple of times and all was well and they let me go home as soon as I got home I found I could not go for a pee it hurt and took ages to trickle out after two weeks I begged for a catheter to be put in and i was told to like train my bladder by oppening it when I get feelings that my bladder is full. the problem is two weeks with catheter back and I don't feel anything in my bladder, they are now going to send me to urology, has any body else had this problem after surgery and what might it be, will I ever go to pee normal again, I am so scared of having catheters in while awake, thanks all

probably just temporary nerve damage. don't panic yet. Do they have you self cathetering? don't know if you are a guy or chic. But I'm a chick and I have had to have several catheters put in awake. It really isn't that big of a deal. Probably way different if you are a guy.

For now, relax when on the toilet. Turn on the faucet, listen to some music. As I said, probably just temporary nerve damage. It can take several months to return to normal.

thanks ddd45 I hope you are rightup about it clearing . I don't self catheterise I had it put in and it was awful, I am still sore now and worry if they take it out It will be hell to get another back in.

I am without bag but able to turn the tap on and offm they say towait untill I feel I must go then wait a little longer then empty tap to train my bladder, I have no feelings of full bladder so just empty every hour or so, I'm worried I'm male by the way yeah

for me.. it sorta felt the same. Like I never knew I had to go. I ended up having to get recathed in the hospital three different times. And one of the times... they were not very good at it..think because I had fistualas and hematomas.. .it took 4different attempts. It was AWFUL.

But anyways, when I was recently catheter free one night and started suffering horrid pain. One nurse guessed it was because I needed to go. Anyways, she got me to the toilet. And sat me there. Turned the water on. I sang to myself and after about 15 minutes ... voila. Then I buzzed for her. She came back and said.. stay there longer. And what do you know... voila.. I went more. So maybe that might help you too. To get the thing all the way empty once you get it going.

So try to be calm about it for awhile as normality will most likely return.

I had issues when they pulled my cath. It lasted months. I would feel like I had to go alot. It hurt (a little) for a couple of months once I got home. When was still in the hospital (after just going to the bathroom) they scanned my bladder and found enough liquid to fill a pop can. It did get better while there. I could mostly empty my bladder...say to 100ml.

I found it helpful to pee, stand up, then pee again. I would go to the bathroom until I couldn't go anymore. Then I would stand back up for, say, 30 seconds and then I would need to pee again.

They also told me to sit in a warm bathtub and pee when I felt the need. Gross but it supposedly helps.

I mentioned it to my docs a couple of times but they said to let them know if it got worse or if it continued for awhile.

Part of it may be, at least it was/is in my case that I dont pee near as much as when I had a colon. You may be expecting to pee like you did before surgery, but you wont without a colon, particularly if your ileostomy output is liquidy. You have to absorb the water and excrete what you dont need and that is harder with out a colon, the body will adjust but it takes some time. Now if you feel you need to pee your bladder is full and can't, that is a different matter.
