Here's an interesting find on pubmed re. rectal cancer risks for the retained stump and opinions on its removal. I gather that surgery to remove the stump is as rough to recover from as any ither if these surgeries, and this has the added risks, like jpouch surgery, of causing long term damage to sexual or urinary function because it is such a tight, delicate area to operate in. So not sure what I'll do long term (if I dont proceed to steps2&3) beyond getting it biopsied a lot under some sedation. Am certainly going to research this topic more after my upcomng surgery.
