I'm staring at my bottle of Celebrex right now. Was it reintroduced to the market?

I'm in Germany and have been taking celebrex for knee pain for 1,5 years. My knees became very painful and stiff after the colectomy.

Advertising for Celebrex was voluntarily suspended in the late 00s after Vioxx was pulled from the market because the chemicals are similar and there was concern that it may have similar issues. That never really came to pass and Celebrex has been available consistently all along (I believe they started advertising it again as well)

Wow! Thx. I can certainly ask about this. I talked to dr puder on the phone one day and he said that the celebrex worked great in mice but did not work well in larger animals (rabbits) in preventing adhesions. That is why he tried sutent the anti cancer drug. I did not find out how that went. I will try and get back in touch with him and see how his research is going.

I'm in Australia and don't think Celebrex has ever been banned here

I just did a round of xifaxan (rifaxamin) for what my CC GI doc suspected might be SIBO. It took a full two weeks of the antibiotic for it to help. But it sure did work. And like liz said, it is a common drug to use for sibo, with minimal side effects.

Also - rosemary I'm at CC for a procedure and an ileoscope myself tomorrow!!!

Ddd what time? I go at 7 am for 7:30. Dr shen is doing mine. I have vein access issues but here is hoping.

I have to ask him if i can try that xifaxin. I just cannot stand this bloat and if it does not enter the blood stream maybe it will have minimal side effects unlike the other two i tried but with me who knows?

I guess xifaxan is hit and miss for side effects? I tried it for my UC a few months ago as a last dtch (currently weeks to go to byebye colon- can't wait, frankly!) and it immediately gave me an increase from muddy stool to liquid D so I stopped after 2 days. Tempted to try it abain now that I have a steroid non-responding liquid D flare in my final weeks but a bit afraid to mess things uo further at this point, but in principle it is supposed to be entirely non-systemic. Maybe in my case it was the colon that was thrown out of wack and it is more golden for small bowel- certainly antibiotics for joouchers never seem to cause other problems when used for pouchitis, right?

I thjink anyone can have any reaction from any drug. Back with my working stoma in those 4 good years when i could eat food, i had to take cephalexin for pneumonia and it was just dine no diarrhea. But now it did a nimber on me. Maybe because i can pass only liuids? I don't know? RJ

rosemary very glad to hear dr. shen is doing your scope. He is my GI doc. He is the best, so he will know for sure what can be done, if anything with your stoma, without surgery.
Also, you don't have to be sedated for an ileoscope. The last one I had, he did without me having an appt, so I didn't have a driver. I did it without sedation so it was no big deal at all. So if you are worried about vein problems, just do the scope without sedation then you won't need an iv.

My procedure and ileoscope is later on and I am getting sedated because the procedure is for my unhealed wound, and that seriously would hurt.

And yes, read about xifaxan and sibo. I am extremely drug sensitive, allergic to so many antibiotics, etc.. But I had xifaxin with my jpouch and now just the last few weeks and it did really help me. Though it did take the full two weeks for sure.

Wow you are brave an ileoscope with no sedation. Jeeze! I think i will let them at my right forearm but tell them to be extremely careful. I gotta get some xifaxin to at least try - am blown up like a balloon. The second i touch sugar that is what dr shen said sugar makes it really act up.

I had forgotten from prior iloescopies to do clears the day before. They did not remind me and just called at 4:30 to remind of appt. They i said omg i drank that boost vhc so thick and not clear. She said well just go clear from now on. So i had grape juice and coconut water and it seems to be runny.

I emailed shen and told him what i had done and had forgotten about the clears. The girl said he is having them come in early to do my ileoscopy so i could get home to mass sooner. Sure hope they can do it. Yep he wants me out of the OR if he can.

Have you ever heard of anyone getting a balloon dilation of their ileosstomy stoma. Well it is not exactly of the stoma. He said if a part of the bowel is narrowed down below the stoma he can dilate that. But i woulkd need repeated dilations. I can see that with people with crohns etc but mine would be scar tissue wrapped around outside of the bowel. Not sure how effective that would be. We shall see.

I am glad to hear that he is good. He was extremely nice and was educating a bunch of residents and me too. I liked the education part of it. One of the residents cell phones went off and he looked at her and said that would not be good if we were in a conference so he did not cuss her out or scowel or anything but just educated her. She looked embarrassed. Then mine started going off nad. I set it on silent and we all chuckled a bit.

Soooooooo wish i had never had that surgery that lead me down this road and that i had kept my mt sinai stoma. It was very narrow but at least could put out thickened waste from very limited but real food. Each surgery goes worse and worse. I am truly scared. We shall see what comes of tomorrow.

I was so frustrated that the ileoscopy done at beth israel came up "angulated" but normal. Well good no disease but knew htat was not an issue. But what about why it does not work. We shall see.

CC's prep for ileoscopes is just 3hours no food, no drink prior. So no worries for you there.

Also seriously, the ileoscope that I had without sedation was not painful. Just a bit uncomfortable. I think the idea of doing it without sedation freaked me out more than anything, also because I was alone that day. But he had seen me in his office on his day off, and then wanted to do an ileoscope immediately. So I couldn't say no to him. They had an extra nurse in when they had to do it without sedation. I think her job was to distract me. But then Dr. Shen.. as he is.. kept wanting me to look at the screen as he explained stuff. No thank you.

Yes, he always seems to have students with him nowadays. A few years back, never. But always now.

And yes, I have heard of dilatation with endoscopy. But he will know for sure tomorrow when he scopes you. They can do all sorts of things with endoscopy now, trying to avoid surgery. He is trying to work magic via injections and endoscopy to try to heal my chronic wound from jpouch removal surgery over one year ago. As an IBD patient, he does not want me to have yet another massive surgery. So he is doing something experimental on my wound that has never been done on anyone else at CC or elsewhere that he is aware of. I call myself his little guinea pig! But it it works... he really is my angel.

Wow! He is a pioneer! Nothing 3 hours prior was whaty i was told yesterday but today the girl was like uh oh so we agreed i would just go clear 4:30 onward. Sure would be nice if he could do something non surgical. I cannot stand the thougts of more surgery but i can't not eat forever also. Plus if this stoma is about to close i need to know about it. So i have to do this. Thx RJ

Hi Rosemary

I had a balloon dilatation without sedation and it was fine, not very uncomfortable at all. Unfortunately, although it did dilate it substantially, it didn't work too well as I still had a kind in the bowel just beneath the stoma so that ended up doing a revision which worked like a bomb. But to loosen the tight muscle, balloon dilatation works really well. All the best, will be holding thumbs.

Had the dilation and ileoscopy early this a.m. With dr shen. He found 2 kinks inder the stoma very narrowed and the stoma itsElff to be very stenosed. He dilated all of it. I had sedation a bit at a time so was not totally out. When i needed more they gave it to me. The nurse was great and used one of my hard veins with great success. I asked how could this work with the scarrring being on outside of bowel. Hte nurse said sometimes it just does for awile then you have to have it reprated Evry 3 to 6 months. But today i just sleep ans have clears. And watch for excessive bood as he also took. Abiopsy to rule out late chrones and he said all looked fine mucosea wise. I cannot understand why beth israel did not pick up on two kinks and a stenosed stoma. Skill levels vary. So tomorrow i try v8 and yogurt and ice cream that clogged me p day before yesterday and see hwo it do. Staying in cleveland thru weekend at least. So if i need surgery as in if te dilations don't work, dr remzi will now have a road map. So am glad i had this done. I sooooo should have skipped mayo az and come right here for the 3rd revision. The talent is here. Furhter back i should have come here originally and none of this stoma stuff qould have needed to be. But now is now and maybe dr r can do this revision successfully if the dilations don't hold. I feel really hungry now for sure. Rj

Rosemary, YAY. This is good news. It is bizarre that we just talked about Dr Singh trying to dilate my stoma FIRST before all my surgeries that time when I had all those complications.

I did read on one of these message boards where somebody had to have their stoma dilated every 3 to 6 months though I'm not sure which one.

i sure hope this helps you to be able to eat food and drink like a normal person.

And I'm shocked that nobody has seen those kinks and and has let you suffer and starve. ARGH mad

Yeah how ere these miSsed. Keep in mind this is only a try the doc says NO guarantees. Today sleeping and on clears. Tomorrow back to usual boost vhc and liquid yogurt and coffee etc. Then next day try some diluted V8 and milk and regular yogurt that realy gunked me up prior. If it fails it fails but i think was woth a try.

I changed my appliance and saw two superficial woulds one in each side of the stoma. I am watching to be sure poo does not start coming out of them like with my prior stoma cracks. Seems like the doc used a very small scope but i was on some good drugs. RJ

Wow, I'm glad they at last found some info for you (and your surgeon). It is truly amazing what they have found that others missed.

Wow Rosemary, this is fantastic news!! At least they found something, always reassuring when they actually see something wrong, makes us feel that all our concerns were validated! Here's hoping and praying that the dilatation will work, will keep my fingers and toes crossed for you. Stay optimistic, I am sure it will work!!!

Thx the dilations actually made things worse and i have huge scarred cracks on each side of stoma. Tried to pass some V8 juice a real thickener last night and it did not pass without the aide of a ton of grape juice. Prior to dilations it did pass in a very narrow stream. Jeesh! But at least they found something. Going to try and get seen before i go home. Auuugh! RJ

Rosemary,

I am sure swelling is normal. I had severe swelling after a finger check of my stoma before to the extent that my biggest wafer was not big enough to accommodate the swelling of my stoma it was so HUGE.

I never had cracking though!! Ugh.

But the stoma and intestine has been traumatized and stretched and swelling I would guess should be expected.

I'm glad you are gonna hang around to see the doctor and see what he thinks.

So things got worse. The cracks in the stoma have turned to huge areas of scar tissue which further inhibit the stoma from working. Last night I was in the ER with a HUGE bag full of blood. The ER staff was horrified. I would go empty one bag of blood and the next one would start.

I emailed the doc. At least he did email back. I said as you dilated the stoma and the 2 kinks beneath it at 5 and 10 cm underneath the stoma per the report, could there be cracks and scarring in the bowel under the stoma and he said yes! What a set up for peritonitis!

The ER was going to keep me overnight in their observation ward and did arrange private area there. But the bleeding had stopped and they put in an iv which really hurt I have no veins left I kept telling them. So I said I will take responsibility and sign out and go back to the hotel to get some sleep.

As ER's go there's was very well run but I just need sleep as I am so malnourished and run down. Hotel bed never felt so good. I need to change this wafer as I can see the scarring on the stoma is enlarging a big white mass. Why would you stretch a stoma so much that it cracks? jeeze!

i don't dare change this stoma wafer tonight as I am afraid that if it is stuck to the scar tissue and I cannot get it off the scar tissue on the stoma and the scar tissue rips off the stoma we will have THE BIG BLEED!!!!
