My surgery was on in Nov. 2012 and I also had anal closure. I spoke with 3 surgeons and 2 WOC nurses while I was in the hospital post surgery about
the various issues I would encounter during the healing process and they all said the anal wound would be the most troublesome. Simply put, it just seems like it take forever but in reality, for me at least, it took about
6 weeks with the first 3 being the worst. Now, 6 months later, I can hardly even remember going through it. Still, I can offer my two cents worth of advice.
DO NOT USE A RING TO SIT ON. As others have pointed out, it spreads the butt cheecks....NOT GOOD.
GEL CUSHION. I purchased a square gel cushion before the surgery so it was there and ready when I went home. I used it each and every time I sat down and it gave me just the right support and comfort I needed. Mine had the gel pack inside with a fleece outside cover. Here's a website to go to that shows the one I have though I didn't order from this site:

USE A VERY WARM WASHCLOTH A COUPLE OF TIMES A DAY TO SOOTH. My WOC nurse did this every time she visited and it felt so good. Just make sure the area is dry before putting your undies back on.
The wedge or worm of skin you mentioned really does reform and you will never even know its there. Think of it as just a swollen line of skin that over time heals and forms nicely into the butt crack space. Truthfully, I've only taken a mirror and looked at it a few times and as someone else mentioned, looks normal just without the hole.
On another note, only 5 weeks after surgery I caught that horrible upper respitory flu that was going around and developed the "cough from hell" that lasted 6 weeks. Try coughing from deep inside while you have an anal wound that's trying to heal ! I had to hold my butt cheeks tight everytime I coughed and I really think it did delay the healing somewhat but in the end, anal wound healed great and all is good now.
Are you walking ? A little walking everyday really does help things from getting stiff and sore.
Best of luck.
