few simple questions

1. Got my xifaxin (Rifaxamin) for small intetinal bacterial overgrowth. Only comes in large enteric coated pill form (here anyway)

Did anyone else find it in non-enteric coated form pills or even liquid form?

If not, did you do ok with just crushing the enteric coated pill and sprkinling the pill parts in whatever you ate (or in my case whatever I drink?)

2. For those of you who have dealt with stoma revsisions for scar tissue and I know there are only a few, how long did your docs advise you to wait for adhesions to soften?

3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 1 year? Will be 9 months for me as of june 11 revision/likely relocation

4. Regarding a 5th stoma revision for scar tissue, my case unique, but did anyone ever have a stoma moved to the other side? How do they close up the old hole?

Crushing the xifaxan would defeat the entire reason for taking it. It is designed to release in the intestines causing less systemic side effects and more "bang for the buck" where the sibo problems are. Hence the word enteric.

I see no reason why you wouldnt take the pill as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor ordered it for you to solve a medical problem. Try following the doctors plan and you will probably get a whole lot better.

Rosemary, there are different kinds of enteric pills -- some release in the small intestine and some the large (in the ibd world there's pentasa and asacol -- same drug, but coated differently depending on whether someone has large/small intestine involvement).

I think most OTC enteric coated things are designed to be released in the colon, so that's why people w/ostomies are warned against them.

But anything that's intended for SIBO is by definition going to release in the small intestine, so you should be fine. Crushing would be a bad idea, as your stomach acids would ruin the pill before it got where it's needed.

these tablets can be crushed. in fact, a suspension can be made in a pharmacy by crushing the tablets. i did not find any info that they are enteric coated either on the website of the mfg. or in lexicomp.

I still do not understand why you just don't swallow the pill. I am on the drug myself for horrid sibo prescribed to me by the GI guru Dr. Shen at CC. I was never told to crush them. What is the issue with just swallowing the pill? And I think if you are really feeling poorly you would surely give them a shot. Xifaxan has a pretty high success rate when used properly for sibo.

Ok these pills dissolve in water in less than 5 mins. Just tried it. Good! Tomorrow I will pop my first one and see how we do. Maybe some hard shiny reddish coatings not the true enteric coateds. Cool.

they are not enteric coated, they may have a film coat but that is not an enteric coating.
