Cold/sinus medicine?

Has anyone found a good cold and sinus medicine? I have a terrible cold and am trying to find anything that works. The stuff I used to rely on is all either NSAID based or time release, and DayQuil/NyQuil liquids aren't helping at all. And the Tylenol cold callers came right out in my bag :( Anyone used anything successfully?

I found the Benylin products worked - The All-in-One caplets. They have both a day and a night version and you can buy a package that contains both.

I usually get the stuff from behind the counter that you have to submit to a DNA test for, lol. It really seems to the be the only thing that helps clear me up. It doesn't work for a cough though, for that I just take something like nyquil, usually the walmart brand.

Mucinex orks really well for clearing up congestion. It thins the mucous and last time I had a cold my doctor told me to take that. Mucinex D (D for Decongestion) works even better, but that's another DNA sample submission ;). You can't take it with any other cough/mucous suppression medication as you would be overdosing on certain ingredients. However, you could also take it with Tylenol to take down fever and be ok. I think both Mucinex and Mucinex D can come with cough suppresion. It depends on if coughing is interfering with your daily life (like coughing at night) or if you want the stuff out of your body.

Also, look into cough syrups. My doctor has also recommended Deslym (by specific name). I can't remember if that was for cough or congestion plus cough. But there are also syrups by Dayquil/NyQuil that might be absorbed better.

There are also generic versions of both, but I can't remember the chemical names right now. They usually hang out near the Mucinex.

Oops, sorry. Just read that the "quill" liquids aren't helping you. Maybe the Deslym would?

I tried the Mucinex in
Liquid form and it seems to be helping. Fingers crossed. I do miss my extended release Aleve cold and sinus (another one that requires a DNA sample, but so worth it).

Maybe I'm mistaken, but now that you've had your colon removed, couldn't you take NSAID based medication again? I actually bought some Advil the other day because I just assumed it would be safe now with no colon....what do y'all think?

i thought once you had the plumbing removed, there wasn't ANYTHING you couldn't do !

Nope, because NSAIDs cause ulcerations in the stomach and the duodenum.

For that reason, I have never really understood why NSAIDs were contradicted in IBD confined to the colon or terminal ileum.

Interesting, I never knew this but looks like you're right. My mom has Crohn's duodenitis so she's always been super anti-NSAID, I always assumed it could cause ulcerations throughout the GI tract. Now I want to ask my GI!!

Anyway all of my GIs have always been staunchly anti-NSAID even though I only had colitis, so I'm assuming it's still contraindicated after surgery... sorry buds.

So, NCOT and Pluot....you are saying NSAIDS are bad for everyone, right? What y'all are saying leads me to think that since I had UC, and now have no colon, NSAIDS are no worse for me than they are for "normal, healthy" people....or am I still missing something? My BF has been having lots of IBS type issues and can't get to the bottom of it (no pun intended), he also takes Advil quite frequently....maybe he should stop? I have my final follow up with my surgeon next week, I will definitely ask her about this and probably shoot an email to my GI too.

Soystud... Other than this NSAID mystery, there has NOT been ANYTHING I can't do so far since my surgery!! Well, there are the physical limitations one should observe in order to avoid a hernia, but had I gone the JPouch route, that wouldn't be a concern either...oh well, small price to pay! That said, I have been eating just about anything I want, doing whatever I want, getting out in the world, taking care of myself, my house, my dogs and having a great time with my amazing boyfriend!! Work has also been going pretty well...though I'd much rather be independently wealthy! :) How have you been?

To be honest, I do take the occasional ibuprofen for headaches or period pain. I always have done. I'm not sure how long it takes for NSAIDs to cause damage to the upper GI tract, but I assume it takes a bit more than two pills to do it. Also, I dunno if NSAIDs can cause ulcers in the jejunum or ileum, but I'm pretty sure they do not cause them in the colon.

@pluot - If you do ask your GI, free free to post their reply in here. I'm interested in knowing as well.

I used to take them on occasion anyway, but now I'm more concerned since I do t have as much left to mess with! If anyone gets a different message, I'd live to hear it. Even Alka Seltzer cold, which I thought would be perfect since it dissolves in water, is an NSAID - hard to find stuff and this cold is kicking my butt!

It is hard to find the individual ingredients. The big pharmacies/groceries around here carry the 57 symptoms plus sleep aid plus Motrin plus PMS brands.

I have to go to a small corner pharmacy to get cough syrup - that is just for coughs, the guafesin for congestion, and Sudafed for nasal congestion. Then I take the individual ingredients based on what I actually have. With Tylenol if I want it.

We have to have an actual prescription to get Sudafed in my county.

I just had a severe cold and mild sore throat that is just ending now after the usual 6 day course from start to end. Anyway, I took generic sudafed, Tylenol (acetamenophen) and at night , Tylenol PM along with herb and ginger tea as well as chicken soup and slathering vaporub on my throat and chest. None of the pills or caplets failed to dissolve before getting to my 3 week old stoma (end ileo).

I think you need to take a lot of nsaids to get an ulcer. The problem is, those cause ulcers, tylenol causes liver failure. Neither is good for you.

NSaids are not recommended for those with a j-pouch - from Cleveland Clinic literature -

"Patients are encouraged to avoid NSAIDs, since these agents may contribute to pouchitis and pouch strictures."

If you are just worried about the upper GI, as summerstorm said, I think it would take a lot.

Mucinex works wonders for me too. That combined with the Neil Med sinus squeeze bottle rinse usually takes care of sinus issues for me. Shortens colds a little too because it gets the crud out. (I use the little pre-made packets that come with the Neil Med bottle, but there are recipes for making your own with salt and baking soda... you just have to get the right combo).
