Hernias Anyone ?

Still home recovering from surgery for an incarcerated hernia of the stoma that laid me flat 12 days ago.  Very uncomfortable and lots of soreness.

So I'm curiuos, since I've been told that hernias are not that rare for an ostomite, how many of you out there have had a hernia because of surgery to create the stoma and thus weakening the abdominal wall ?

I realize that my type of hernia wasn't too common in that it totaly blocked my stoma and required this painful surgery but I am looking for other stories.

I haven't had a hernia myself, but I was in hospital with a female my age who'd had a temporary ostomy for a year after emergency surgery for Crohn's. When I met her, she no longer had the ostomy but she still had the hernia she had developed as a result.

Feel for you. I know her hernia made her really miserable, so I hope yours is all sorted now.

I have a hernia. My doctors wont do surgery and it is about the size of grapefruit. Other than the fact that I look pregnant from one side and clothes dont fit it isn't that big of a deal. Though I would jump at the chance to get it fixed.

I have a parastomal hernia I got when I had a cold and coughed hard. I was told, right after my ostomy surgery, to not lift anything over 20 pounds because I could get a hernia. I followed their suggestion. No one told me I should hold my abdomen when coughing. cry I felt the muscle rip and knew exactly what had just happened.

My hernia is inoperable, too, but I've learned how to live with it. Yes, I look pregnant. I was asked when my baby was due a couple of years ago. When I told her I wasn't pregnant, she was so embarrassed. I laughed and told her I was happy she thought I was young enough to be pregnant...I was 64 at the time. tongue Gotta laugh or I'd cry.

My hernia is the size of a grapefruit. My reversal is set for tomorrow and they will take care of it then.
