removal of rectum

Hi, nana1950, If you scroll down this page you will see another post from DSZ asking about rectum surgery. you may want to take a look till someone replies on here. I can't give any advise as I haven't had my rectum removed xx

Hi Nana 1950, I also had my rectum removed and anus closed when I had my colectomy just over 3wks ago. I was in Hosp for a week. I had sutures in the anal wound and these have dissolved now and I can sit comfortably, walk and do most things. I also have crohns and after discussion with my surgeon I decided to have the colon, rectum and anus removed in one op to save me having to have further surgery. I know its only 3 wks but so far I feel its the best decision I made. I feel so much better with the diseased bits now gone.
If you are having the anus closed as well then have some barrier cream handy in case the anal wound leaks a bit in the early days as it irritates a little. Also some thin pads - I used the kitchen roll cloths that don't break up when wet.
My advice would be to go for it and then get on with your life. For me the short spell of discomfort was worth it and taking some mild analgesics was really effective.

I had my rectum removed and anus closed at the time of my ilesotomy back in 2000. I also have Crohn's and had very bad rectal involvement. My case is not like the others as I had the wound left open to heal from the inside out, because I had a history of fistulas and abscesses and if they closed it they were afraid of that. It was insanely hard recovery and it took 6 months to close, I could not sit for a very long time and it drained constantly.... OMG so, so hard

I would first find out what kind of surgery they were planning to do it seems for most they close the wound and as others said that seems easier
