Hello all,
Just wanted to post an update that my takedown was Friday afternoon around 1:00. My bowels woke up Saturday morning around 3:30 am and I was discharged by Sunday at 3:00 pm.
I think the worst part so far has been the gas.... It's very painful and like others say I can't pass gas without being on the toilet. But burn has set in but is not to bad so long as I use wipes and cream after each BM.
I have tried to eat only small amounts at a time and never anything after 6 pm, which seems to have worked the past two nights as I've only had to get up once around 3 am for a BM.

Do they have you on any special diet? I have my reversal coming next month. I'm curious as to what to expect

That was a quick hospital stay! Sounds like you are doing really well. Yeah, I remember those gas pains. They were brutal but they only lasted maybe a week. It gets better (much better) as the weeks pass.

what is the "butt burn" I hear a lot about
? What is the cause of it?

Well as far as diet goes it's pretty much the same as after the first two surgeries. Low fibre, no nuts, seeds and skins. I also only eat well cooked veggies and little to no fruit. I also stay well away from carbonated drinks and anything else that will cause/increase gas.
The butt burn really hurts (I'm sure my husband is already sick of me saying "my butt hurts!" LOL).
Butt burn is cause by frequent bowel movements of loose acidic stool. I'm hoping it subsides soon because I dread going to the bathroom already.

what's the reason for the acid production after take down? Is this stomach acid that's making it through to your colon and not being absorbed in a normal way?

It's bile. Bile is normally used in digestion in the small intestine and then reabsorbed in the terminal ileum and colon. blksteeda since you still have most of your colon it probably won't be an issue for you -- Dillysmom doesn't have a colon anymore at all.
The butt burn will get better, I know it sucks in the beginning. Instead of wipes I highly recommend washing with water, either with a bidet or a squirt bottle or even just hopping in the shower quickly. Much easier on your skin.
Sounds like you're doing well, keep it up!

Sounds like you are doing well! I had my takedown last Wednesday and was home Saturday morning. I'm also only going once in the night which is so much better than I thought it would be! Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Hi there and congrats on your takedown! Even after 37 years, every once in a while, the bile will decide to shoot thru and can cause really bad butt burn. What I've found is after gently cleaning with a cold rag (cold feels good) I use Budreaux butt cream....its actually diaper cream and has good healing stuff in it. I put it on thick because it helps repel some of it. I've heard from others that the matzo crackers are pretty good and do help. I keep some around so that when this happens, I just eat one. Have also discovered if I get the McDonalds meal that has the 2 reg hamburgers + fries that for some weird reason, this helps...not recommending right after surgery but something to keep in the back of your mind. Hang in there!

Congrats ! The butt burn still gets me sometimes, but I know it 's self-inflicted ... I eat whatever I want, and pay for it! I recently discovered Balneol. Got it on Amazon. Best stuff ever - it's a thin lotion that you apply, so it doesn't feel as icky as the heavy creams. And it works do well! It's kind of expensive, but you don't need a lot, and it is so amazing - takes away burning and itching better than anything else I've tried. So I am now almost 3 months out and while it's not perfect, it's a lot better than being sick! And it gets better every day.

Thanks for all the replies!!
Yes I would have to say that the butt burn is still my main complaint!! I've had some episodes of urgency but that is mostly due to gas and what I've eaten. I find that if I drink flat ginger ale it helps with gas a bit but it's still plenty and painful in the evenings. I am going to have to order some different creams (thank you for the suggestions). Has anyone heard of a prescript
ion of medicated barrier cream? Not sure if that even exists.

Hi Dillysmom,
I like Calmospetine for butt burn treatment. Not sure if you tried that one. I have also heard that ILEX works really well.
