Hi,

I've posted a few times with questions about my upcoming proctectomy (thank you Hodaya and others for sharing your experience), and just thought of another one.

My sister will be staying with me when I get home from the hospital, and I'd like to know what to tell her in terms of providing care. I don't know yet if there will be a Home Health Nurse coming to check on me. My sister is wonderful and wants to make sure that she's prepared for whatever needs to happen. But, just like me right now, she's a little stressed about what to anticipate.

I'd love to hear your suggestions/experiences with this.

This and other ostomy sites are great sources of information but I believe You Tube can be your best friend.  Lots of "how to" videos.

So now in addition to everything else - I had a CT scan today which shows a parastomal hernia of about 10 cm. Dang! Seeing my surgeon on Monday to discuss.

Needless to say I'm just a little more stressed than I was. If you've had a parastomal hernia, please let me know how it was repaired, etc.

Sorry to hear that things keep piling up for you....life can never just be simple, can it?! I have never had a parastomal hernia, but have talked some about them with my surgeon. I think each surgeon has their own approach on how to deal with them. Some don't like to do surgery unless the hernia is seriously impeding your life or is very large and bothersome. My surgeon said that when she does repair them, it is either done by pushing the intestines back where they belong, and putting a mesh patch over the area where the hernia occurred, or in some cases she will relocate the stoma completely. I hope you get things worked out and are feeling great soon!

Thanks for your kind note. As nervous as I am about having to do 2 surgeries in 1, I think I'd rather have the hernia repaired now before it gets to be a big problem. It does affect the ability for my appliance to stick well and when I do change it, it's very uncomfortable when I push and hold it so it'll stick.

In any case - we'll see what happens when I meet with the surgeon on Monday.
