J pouch surgery, how long in between operations?

Hi All,

I got advised to post this on the Ostomie board for help


Ive just had the first stage of 3, for J pouch, been out of hospital a week, slowly recovering,

I heard online that in-between surrgey 2 and 3, was usually a 3 month recover time period,

However my surgeon said he would normally do 6 months for stage 2, then 5 moths time after for stage 3. so 11 months total.

I know this can't be rushed but is that normal? i don't want to miss work too much and be out for too long

It depends on your health state and what drugs you were on. If you were really sick, then your surgeon would probably prefer if you waited.

I was on steroids and Remicade at the time of my first surgery. Well, I had to stop the Remicade six weeks before but I was still on steroids. My surgeon wanted me to wait six months to get the steroids out of my system. I also had to lose weight.

I'm still waiting for step 2. I had quite a life threatening illness this summer and now I have to wait a "year or two" for a jpouch to let me body adequately heal and get over everything. This is from a well respected surgeon/institution.

I was on the exact same, steroids and remicade (infliximab) so im guessing 6 months is normal

What about the stage after that……for stage 3?! as then there won't be any remicade or steroids, so do you think the gap fromm stage 2-3 should be 3 months maybe rather than a full 6 again?

Unless you have some sort of complication(s) earlier on, there shouldn't be any reason for waiting longer than 3 months between steps 2 and 3 if you are totally healed. Having said that though, all surgeons are different with how they do things.

I had to wait minimum of 6months between my step 1 and 2, and steps 2 and 3 of jpouch surgery. I don't think its that unusual for surgeons to be conservative.

However, with that said, there is absolutely no reason you cannot work after each step. I was back at work about 6weeks after step 1 (which had been an emergency surgery) and back at work about 8 weeks after step 2.

I waited 4,5 months for my step 2, and doc says it'll be 2,5 months for step 3 (on my third week from the op). It really depends on your health and what type of meds were you given and how long.
In my case I only had one flair was 2 months in the hospital and rushed thru inmunosupressors all the way the way up to remicade and nothing worked.
Work wise, from my step 1 I was going to work after 3 weeks and it will be the same for step 2, now I'm lucky because first 2 weeks of work I take them really slow. You wont believe how your strength gets back to you after step 1.

I wanted to get it done while out on my 6 months short term disability leave. And my surgeon said as long as I healed well, the minimum time between surgeries for a 3 step procedure is 8 weeks. Finished and recovered all within the 6 months!
