I have Crohns disease and an Ileostomy.
For the past year I have had a bad intestinal infection. The reason I think it is an infection is because my output smells bad.. Really bad. Like I empty my bag and it smells the whole bathroom and it hangs around for like an hour. I am to the point where I do not use friends bathrooms and I end up just leaving wherever I am just because my bag is filling up. I talked to my doctor about this and he said that because I have active crohns disease a few inches behind my stoma, bacteria gathers there. My doctor has put me on cipro, cefdinir and flagyl. None of them have worked. They don't really know what to do next. I can't keep living my life with this.
I am currently on Imuran, Remicade and probiotics.
Please help!
Also, I have tried a bunch of really good odor eliminators. All they do is add another scent to the smell. Doesn't cover it up

Brian, so sorry that you're still dealing w/so much. A drag that the flagyl etc didn't help.

A few thoughts. Have you tried the odor control things that you take as pills, like devrom or chlorophyll? Some people have good results w/them.

Have you tried something like ozium -- very heavy duty deodorizer (often used to conceal illegal smells.....). Also wondering if there's a way to starve the bacteria w/some kind of extreme elimination diet for a while.... not fun, but possibly worth it at this point.

Have you been tested for c difficile? The test you should have is the PCR test of the stool. C diff has a bad lingering smell. It can be in the small intestine (there had been previous thought that it occurs only in the colon). I have a j pouch and am on a vancomycin taper for it.

I have tried the chlorophyll pills. They did basically the same as the deodorizers. Just added another smell to my output and turn it green. I will definetely check out what you suggested but I would like to get to the bottom of this.
If my GI doesn't have another suggestion I am going to ask if he can refer me to someone who deals with this stuff so I can get it fixed. I hate having to leave places all of the time just because I have to go to the bathroom.

Devrom is what works for me. I chew 6 a day. 3 am and 3 pm. I can't miss doses either. Go to devrom.com and order the chewable tablets. My insurance pays for them, but I use edgepark as my supplier and for some reason they stopped carrying the chewables and only carry the capsules. BOO :-(

I am also sick with pneumonia right now and on Levaquin antibiotic and this has eliminated the smell and I haven't even had to take the devrom. Not sure why.
