hi there

 

 I had a perforated abcessed diverticulitis and they did emergency surgery to remove a foot of my colon and i ended up with a ileostomy for about 4 months... i am 2 yrs after my reversal surgery and now i am having alot of pain and a lump right below the scar from the ostomy. my primary dr called the  surgeon and he told her that almost 90% of people that have the reversal end up getting a hernia there also i have a umbilical hernia anyhow also since my surgeries. my question is has anyone else been thru this and would it be a surgical problem or is there anything else they can do? im a certified nurse and i do alot of lifting which makes it hurt like crazy.i feel like im stuck because i can not afford to take anymore time off from work but on the other hand if it keeps hurting like this i wont be able to work anyhow im so confused as to what to do...any ideas or awnsers would be much appreciated   thank you

Well your surgeon is right. Lots of people do suffer from incisional hernia because of weak tissues. Generally it happens in patients who have been on steroids for quite some time. I have a big incisional hernia post 1st stage and it became much bigger now. IT is painful but I do use a binder (abdomen belt) to prevent it from misbehaving, even though without the belt I can't even breath properly as the entire intestines goes down to abdominal area. It gets strangulated. Anyway don't worry consult your surgeon, if he can repair it. In any case use a binder, it would prevent further injuries/complications.

I have had several hernia repair surgeries.  I have a connective tissue problem (Ehlers Danloss) which is the underlying cause of this for me.  I just had my ileostomy reversed (Mar 9) and at the same time the surgeon repaired a peristomal hernia that had popped out.  Prior to that I had two abdominal hernias and one groin hernia repaired.  They aren't fun and you really do have to be careful about lifting and straining in any way.  I am restricted from lifting anything over 25 lbs which put a halt to the  weight training activities I enjoyed so much.  Take care!.........Cheryl

I always wonder how you could handle so many hernias. You are really brave and I must admit it. Whenever I read your mail, I get strength to face my complications. Thanks for your encouraging words to all the forum members.

I want to thank you for responding to my post... i am trying to be careful at work with the lifting but i know i lift way over 25lbs all the time and i kind of wonder if that is part of the reason the hernia is hurting so badly. it feels as tho it is ripping and also has a burning sensation and sometimes feels like i have a big "charlie horse" in my stomach i started with this when i first went back to work after my second surgery (reversal) but it didnt hurt nearly as much as it does now...what a bugger these things are wow... i wish u both good luck with your hernias do either of u have the feelings of ripping and such? I wonder about the binder i have a hard time to just have my waistband on my pants touching it so does the binder make it hurt at all or does it make it feel better? Again thank you this helped alot to know im not totally alone with all this and others are having the same troubles. I hope everyone has a good day and talk later    bye  ~papasgirl :-)

Thanks for your kind words. Well I too have this ripping fealing at times. It seems the intestines would burst. That is the reason I always use binder/abdominal belt all the time, even while I am sleeping. One has to ensure that puts on the binder, while pooing to avoid straining the muscles. IN so far as binder is concerned, the best course is to lie down and adjust the intestines/hernia so that they are not bulging out of the hernia and then tie the belt. These days some companies are also making undergarments/panties with lycra for hernia. I had got one, but that was quite expensive, plus it was not meant for gents and seemed to be ladies stuff.
Please do not lift any weight without binder otherwise you may land yourself in pain and intestines getting entangled with ripping pain. Cheers and keep on this smiling face always.
I get my binder specially customized. It is about 28 inches broad with wellcro. The ones which are available in market are a little stiff and hurt the tender skin. Another thing try to wear the binder on your skin to keep it in place otherwise it tends to shift its position.

hi there

 

 I have finally made an apt with the surgeon and so im going to go see him tomorrow afternoon but im kind of nervous about it. im afraid hes going to tell me i cant work and i really cant afford not to so i dont know what to do about that. my hubby is already disabled and we have 2 kids plus his son is here (who is 25 and doesnt work) im the only one that really is bringing in the money of this house. common sense tells me to stop working and kick out the free loader but its harder to do than it sounds lol i guess im just nervy about everything lately have way too much stuff going wrong all at the same time... if i was to write all the crap ive had to deal with in the last couple months it would take up 3 pages hehehehe i need some good luck passed my way for a change cause im getting a bit irritated with it all now. oh well not much i can do about it i guess and im rambling so thanks to all who reads this and your doing even better if u understand it all lol have a good night ....

My husband just had surgery for his parastomal hernia last week. Right now he is in the kitchen doing dishes. It was a week ago today. You will probably be a able to go to work if you can NOT lift anything over 10 lbs for 8 - 10 weeks. They will probably be able to do it laproscopically and then they don't even cut you open they just make a few very small incisions. I would suggest filing a workers compensation claim if you have to continually life 25 lbs or so. It would be worth looking in to.

 Thanks for responding to my post. Im glad that your husband is doing well :-) I was supposed to go see the surgeon yestarday but having some trouble with my insurance so i am going to go on thursday instead. It would be great if i could have something done to fix this with just the small insision i can work out having a week or two off of work if i need to. Its hard for me to judge how much i actually lift where i am lifting on people but i work with a really good group of girls that are most of the time very willing to help me do lifting or even do it for me. I was told by my primary dr that these kind of hernias are hard to find on a mri or scan so im wondering how they figure out thats what it is do u know? I dont know about a workmans comp thing where this isnt because of work but because of the intestinal surgeries and/or the ileostomy but i can ask around thank you for the idea. I have a hugh hernia that formed in my incision because it opened up because of steriods.,when I had a ileostomy, Now after 3 months they have to reverse it and take out my hernia. anybody have the same problem.

I had a peristomal hernia repair in Decmeber 2010, I got it from pregnancy (my son was born Feb 2007). It was HUGE , larger than a grapefruit. The hard part for me is I have had so much open abdominal surgery I cannot have laproscopic surgery. It also was so large it needed a mesh patch and because I have crohns and crohns will reoccur at the mesh site almost all of the time so I needed my ostomy moved to the left side of my stomach. The recovery was not easy to say the least but I think if you can have it done laproscopically it will be much easier
