Does having a colectomy increase your risk of getting SIBO?

My friend who has a j pouch was just diagnosed with sibo. I referred him to my GI doc (his dr couldn't figure out what was wrong with him) and they did that breath test thing on him and sure enough. He had your symptoms. He's on a round of some antibiotic that begins with an X. Can't remember the name. Get checked out because it just gets worse untreated.

Hmmm....interesting question. I did some quick research and found a page all about SIBO. There was a whole list of other diseases/conditions that often come with SIBO, and don't you know, IBD is on the list. There are also some things on that list that a lot of us IBDers have, so the idea that you could have SIBO is not very far fetched. Here's a link....

Seems hard to see how an ileo would get SIBO, because it washes out so consistently. Isn't SIBO more of a backwash phenomenon, as Pluot suggests? Hope you get to the bottom of it whatever it is. i keep taking probiotics, and will even keep uaing VSL3DS as long as my insurance pays for it (with the new year, it may have timed out withut recertification, not sure).

I took Xifaxan after a positive hydrogen breath test. It did not cause the unending D that most antibiotics I've been on have. I do not think it resolved the issue.

Interesting. SIBO without a large intestine.

@Pluot - I recently saw a medical show on Rosacea and the dermatologist said the same thing. There is a link between both SIBO and rosacea. They found that patients being treated with probiotics for a small bowel bacterial issues, the probiotics cleared their rosacea. The dermatologist then went on to say that other than oral, topical Green Tea Moisturizer or RoseHip will help. Try each one separately and see which one works. Thought I'd share!!!

I just happened to drop in. Yes I had a great stoma for four years that I even did extensive travel with then all of a sudden a severe stenosis. This was at the fascia level and it had to be redone emergency style. The new one, I had to lie in different poositions to get poo out and got a food blockage at the stoma level that I had to bust up with hot tea and walking. But even THAT was the Lgood old days comoared to now.

The second stoma got literally cracked in two places when a resident did a finger exam. Then the scarring from the healing narrowed that in even more.

Then there was mayo and that stoma scarred in in two months. The local revision scarred in in a week. A resident put a urinary catheter in it and I was sent on my way.

Then the big one year wait while adhesions softened. Hah! Well while on liquids only and the drain tube which I eventually got to take out and somehow I could pass liquids, I was better off than I am now.

Long story how I ended up in boston but the transfer of the stoma to the other side was a disaster and one that is going to cost me my life. Ended up with short gut syndrome. Got 5 feet of bowel (small bowel to my name a stoma that basically doesn't work and is orolapsed and has the texture of silly putty, and I have had 4 severe small bowel obstructions in 5 months and a hospitalization for acute kidney injury due to dehydration from the short gut and I am on TPN.

My last small bowel obstruction was last week. Lucky I had my saline and heoparin flushes with me as the hosoital at my town did not believe in flushing them daily. Only twice a week. They coulda clotted up. I am not sure how long heparin lasts but did not want to take the chance so took matters into my own hands and did as instructed by the infusion comoany and how I was trained by the vna.

At this point surgeons are saying I will have pooor quality of life (DUH) and kikely be in and out of hospitals for the rest of my life.

I went to see a hospice. Place for voluntary dehydration/ starvation and did not see one ng tube in the oplace. What would you do if you obstructed while not on any input (? Not know if that would happen?) But their idea according to a nurse is morphine while your guts explode. I don't think so. Am also checking into legalized ophys asst suicide overseas. Pricey but I have to get out of thgis. One way or another. Never take a good stoma for granted and adhesions are as dangerous as poirtrayed.

So the relocation of the stoma turned out tobe a jejunostomy not an ileostomy. I have no clue why so much bowel wAs taken. 3 feet was admitted to due to adhesions but all tolled there would only have been about a foot or two missing witha all these revsision if that. But that would leave me with 16 feet not 5.

I just can't get over how you were fine for 4 years then developed a stenosis. What would trigger that after 4 years...? >.<

Anyway, I don't know what to say to comfort you really. I just hope you can find a bit of peace. Suppose I'm asking the obvious, but have you tried talking to anyone, like a therapist? Do you speak to anyone other than doctors? Just think you ought to find a few people to talk to, if you don't: you shouldn't have to go through this alone.
