Scheduled for J-pouch construction surgery tomorrow, and came down with a cold..

Hi everyone,

I'm scheduled for J-pouch construction surgery tomorrow (step 2 of 3, sub-total colectomy was on September 16) and Saturday morning I woke up with a bad cold, symptoms are runny nose and a cough..

Anyone have any thoughts about what I should expect tomorrow, will they proceed or push it off (I really hope not)..?

Also any suggestions how how I could get rid of this cold fast (I'm keeping warm, getting extra sleep and drinking lots of tea and broth ..

I don't know for sure but I don't think they would proceed with surgery if you have any chest congestion and cough. Sorry, that's bad timing for a cold. Colds just have to run their course. I woke up with one this morning myself. But still go there at your appt. time. They will know what to do. Good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Tell them as soon as you get there and the Anesthesiologist will likely listen to your lungs. at some point If you have anything in your chest, they probably won't go ahead as pneumonia is a worry even when you go in healthy. The cough isn't good - hopefully it's originating high in your throat as opposed to in your lungs.

That said, they won't necessarily cancel it. I went in for my last surgery with a sinus infection. Surgeon and Anesthesiologist were aware.

I had a bad cold, but no cough, when I had my 2nd step surgery. No issues, they just really harped on me about breathing exercises :)

Yes, everything went as planned and I did have the surgery yesterday. I feel that this surgery was less painful than the first (possibly because the first time I wasn't given the option of a Epidural). Interestingly, the cold is now gone. Tried walking today but I felt light-headed so will try again a bit later (I am being easy on the epidural, maybe hitting it every 2 hours or so). Thankfully they removed the folio catheter this morning (really hate that thing) and my pain really isn't too bad.. This morning starting sipping a bit and able to take some ice...

The hospital I'm at is really great when it comes to Colorectal procedures, I'm really happy with the Doctors nurses here.
