Hello, quick question. I have an ileostomy and have just started to excrete out of my bottom as well...I know that can't be good. My enema to check whether my pouch is ready for reversal is scheduled for a week from tomorrow. Does this mean my pouch is leaking? Thanks for any help.

It's normal to expel mucus (and even a little stool) from your bottom. I remember when it happened I freaked out and called my surgeon who said its absolutely normal. I wish he would have told me ahead of time! Anyway, the intestines are alway making mucus. Some people have a little...others a lot. So it's highly doubtful that your pouch is leaking.

It's not mucus; I know b/c I was expelling a ton of mucus, my fecal cal was over 2500. This is definitely not mucus.

A little stool is normal too. Not sure how much you're talking about.

Sorry we must have posted at the same time. I was told a little was normal. I'm not sure about a lot.

Thank you! I know others have had a super rough time with the stoma, but I feel like is the hardest time ever! My stoma has shrunken and is so recessed; the ostomy nurse said not to worry but I'm changing appliances every other day b/c of the severe burning. I cannot wait until this is reversed!!!

I had the same problem with my stoma....it was awful. It was sunken in and I had terrible skin breakdown. I had to change the wafer everyday. Takedown was a happy day for me!

There's a nurse on jpouch.org....Jan is her name. Perhaps if you post this question about the stool coming out your bum on there she can ease your mind about it. I seem to remember others having this happen too.

Thank you soooooo much ByeByeUC. I will do that! Takedown will be one of the best days of my life...probably a piece of cake recovery compared to this fun.

If your loop is really recessed/shrunken then it's even more likely to have stool bypass it and come out 'the old way'. If ANYTHING it's a sign of the stoma not being so great, has nothing to do with the quality of your j-pouch. The pouchogram (contrast x-ray) will be the final word and I'm sure it will be fine! Going in here to say what Pluot said. The intestine pokes out for the loop ostomy then goes back in. It's still connected to the pouch and your anus. So stuff can leak past the stoma and out your bottom. Let your surgeon know, but if you feel ok then everything is fine.
