2 step jpouch

I had a two step. Step one was proctocolectomy and j pouch creation with temp loop ileo and step two was takedown. Was your j pouch made as well in this surgery?

I had some bumps along the way after step one (abscess and infection) but once that healed up it was smooth sailing although my time with the loop ileo was pretty rough. (My stoma recessed and I had a lot of skin issues like bleeding and burning). Step two...takedown...went well with no problems at all.

Typically in a two step procedure, the j-pouch is created inside the body during the first surgery, but you don't actually *use* it until after the second surgery. In other words, it isn't attached to the rest of your GI tract.

Very rarely surgeons will remove the colon during the first surgery, then create the j-pouch AND attach it during the second surgery. This is usually not done because it is safest to let the j-pouch heal first before you start pooping through it.

If the j-pouch is not created in the first surgery, the most common procedure is to have three steps in total: first step to remove the colon, second step to create the j-pouch, and third step to "hook up" the j-pouch and get rid of the ileostomy. This is what I did (three steps listed in signature).
