June 6th = D Day AND Surgery Day

I have to say, I'm darn excited.

This has been a challenging spring. Decision to get surgery + hospital stay for flare = picc line to stay on bowel rest/TPN every night = staph infection at site of line which led to a 10 day hospital stay = a new picc line so I can take antibiotics three times a day.

Not gonna lie, in the midst of all this picc line craziness, I've had some dark moments when I wondered if this was the right decision. But I know it is.

So now I have a date on the calendar to look forward to. Even though I read all sorts of stories and cautionary tales and other things about living with an ostomy, I have to hope for the very best and believe that life will be better than it has been for the past three years. In the hospital the nurses would ask me "Are you sure there's nothing else you can do?". Well I don't know, maybe I'll waste even more of my life in pain, wondering if I'm going to have an accident in public, in and out of the hospital. Yeah. Sounds good. My friends also have the same attitude but I can only attribute that to lack of understanding and the stigma behind wearing a bag.

Anyway I just wanted to share my nervous excitement here. :)

  I would like to thank you for responding to my previous post and wish you the best of luck with your

coming surgery. As mine was only 4 weeks ago I still have fresh in my mind the decision making process

and all of the things that had to be considered. For me in the end it was simply a quality of life issue,

mine could not have gotten worse. Again best wishes, and I wish you a speedy recovery.

Mine was scheduled on D-Day last year. It got delayed a bit until July but all went fine and I haven't looked back. Quality of life is so much better and the anxiety of worrying about accidents has gone.

Welcome Jennifer B.   My D-day was 3 years ago this coming July 14.   Independence Day is more like it, for me  :-)

Until someone has truly walked in our shoes, or in my case--shoes sometimes dotted with poop, they just do not understand.

And yes, it all boils down to quality of life and I had none and it sounds like your case is similar.   It is your decision and I hope it will be as freeing for you as it has been for many of us.

There are lots of things that are far worse than wearing a bag.  Quite honestly, I prefer my new way.  I still get to wipe butts with my grandkids, though smilewinkgrin

I get your excitement as I was counting down the days and could not wait to reclaim my life.

Good luck Jennifer! When I had my ileostomy done in August of 2013, I was counting the days and was so happy to get it done after suffering with severe Crohn's disease for way too long. I've already been able to do things that I never dreamed I'd be able to do again.
