Stoma exit hole

Was taking a closer look at my new stoma today. Surgery was one week ago. I still have the j pouch, so the stoma is a modified type of loop ileostomy, where no stool can go into the pouch. Anyway, I have a nice, round stoma, withe the exit towards the bottom. Well, after one week, i now see the exit hole is right at skin level. So stool exits right at the edge of the wafer. Naturally, i am not happy with this. So what do you think my prospects are for life with a stoma like this? Anybody else dealt with something like this? TIA

Many people live with stomas that are flush with, or even below, skin level. It can take some trial and error in finding the right set up, but is certainly do-able. I have an odd situation with my stoma. It sticks out quite a bit most of the time, but when I lay down at night it shrinks down and ends up being flush. This causes any output I have at night to go right onto, or under, my wafer. The first thing you should check into is getting a convex wafer. This puts some pressure around the stoma, pushing down the skin around it so that it can stick out a little more. Is your stoma permanent? Good luck getting it all worked out!

Yes my stoma let's stool through the exit hole. Was told it's normal. So I end up having small liquid bowl movements and empty my bag. I get my reversal in sept when I'm done with vacations.

If you start getting pain in your rectum (your new pouch) call your dr. I ended up getting pouchitist. Didn't know it, so had the pain three weeks before calling.

My stoma is sometimes out and sometimes retracted. I wear a convatec convex wafer and Geratrix Benzoin Compound Tincture. Never have a leak.

My stoma is a loop ileo and it is round and pretty close to the skin. The exit is also at the bottom. My ET nurse in the hospital was great and she recommended the convex wafer and a barrier ring. I do great with this. If I do get a little rawness around the edges of the stoma, I put the stoma powder on it, wipe excess off with a Kleenex, and dab the corner of a sting-free wipe on remaining powder that has tuck. This helps tremendously for me.
