Pros vs. Cons of the BCIR procedure?

I'm wanting to hear from anybody that has had the BCIR procedure, knows someone with it, or has research it.  What are the pros/cons?

I know one con is that it is only done in a few places...have you looked into a K-pouch?

There is a lot of info at uoaa.org in the kpouch corner section. The BCIR is a form of a modified kpouch, but each surgeon has his/her own modifications that each institute does. It is not performed everywhere as we all know. YOu know I am having a kpouch at CC on Monday and I have done much research so you can ask me anything you want and I will do my best in amswering. The biggest complications are a slipped valve, fistula, and pouchitis. You would be very low risk for the pouchitis becuase of your inertia vs. inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. David Dietz is performing mine and he is supposed to be great. I know Wexner does not do them. Its not a perfect surgery, but many many pts have great satisfaction from the surgery and quality of life. Miss you and hope your well.

The BCIR and the k-pouch are the same surgery but the BCIR has a proprietary valve. You can talk with BCIR patients at www.bcirostomy.org
The BCIR is only practiced in 2-3 hospitals in the nation; the k-pouch is available in more locations. Any surgery to remove the colon and rectum ( s, w, t, k, or jpouch, and bcir) comes with pros and cons. There is no option that comes without disadvantages. The key is knowing if you can live with the shortcomings. I think before choosing your option that you talk with patients of both k and BCIR options. Getting real information from those who live it is best.

Lizzie, I am praying so hard that everything goes perfect for you with your upcoming surgery.  It is all that I can think about.  It seems like all of our problems and surgeries are starting to consume me and all of a sudden, I am really scared.

 

After your surgery, I hope that I can ask you some questions.  I know that you don't feel well now.  I really want to know what the chances of obstructions are, and if you know if anyone at Cleveland Clinic Florida does the k pouch surgery?  You had said that Dr. Wexner doesn't do them. 

 

My husband won't even discuss surgeries other than an ileostomy with me.  I'm going to talk with Dr. Wexner in March and see what he has to say.  This has to be my last surgery.  I don't want to go thru any more.  How did you talk your husband into listening to you and consider the k pouch or bcir surgery?confused

Possible surgery for Brooke ileostomy at Cleveland Clinic Florida 6/10

These posts were written a while ago. How are you all doing now? I'm researching possible K Pouch or BCIR for myself. Any and all advice and input are greatly, greatly appreciated. Particularly factual statistics and firsthand experience. Many Thanks.
