Eakin and adhesive residue

Okay, so tomorrow I'm four months post-surgery and I have settled into a product and routine that I am happy with for the most part. Eakin "Slim" ring with a Coloplast Sensura one-piece and one Genairex arch-shaped barrier strip to cover my belly button. Change whole thing every other day and I typically don't get any leaks or irritation. One complaint, though. The Eakin leaves a lot of adhesive residue and I spend forever scrubbing it off during each change. Does anyone else have this problem? Is it because I'm hairy? I sometimes use adhesive remover wipes but they contain alcohol and can sting. Any suggestions? I've tried Hollister Adapt rings and Coloplast Brava rings but had other problems with those so they're not an option.

Find some wipes without alcohol. I use the Smith & Nephew Remove wipes. No alcohol. No stinging, no pain.

I just ordered the Smith & Nephew Remove wipes last week thinking they'd be "gentle" as their description says. They may have aloe but they do contain alcohol and sting me like the Hollister wipes I had been using. I also have the Safe N Simple Peri-Stoma Adhesive Remover Wipes which have no alcohol and don't sting, but they're not very effective.

I use Eakin slims too- love them! And they do leave a lot of sticky goo.... but I don't really bother to get it all off. The first few times I changed everything, I scrubbed my skin totally clean.. which left it sort of sore & red. Then I figured "Why bother?". I do use those wipes, I forget what brand mine are, but no- they don't work great. I use 2-3 wipes, remove any big chunks of Eakin goo, then wipe everything down with a damp washcloth. Blow it dry really good, then just stick a new Eakin right on. It doesn't make a difference in wear time or anything if there's some residue left on the skin. And harsh scrubbing or picking just irritates the skin. I'm sure the hair doesn't help! But there's always some sticky residue left on my skin, & I just go right ahead & use a new Eakin & wafer. You gotta figure the skin is just going to get stuff all over it again, so....

My stoma nurse said specifically to NOT try to scrub it all off. It's way worse for your skin to irritate it by cleaning it that thoroughly than to leave it on all the time. The only time you need to try to get more of it off is if there is output on the residue (because then putting a new wafer over the residue would mean sticking output directly against your skin). As long as the residue is clean, it's fine.

i was doing something similar and I found it an absolute nightmare getting the residue off. The ring just seemed to disintegrate leaving most of it on me, and the trouble I had getting it off !!! I only used one once or maybe twice and gave up with it.

I must be doing something wrong as according to all the forums most people seem to use them. On the other hand I find the stomahesive paste to be terrific where most people don't seem to like it.

Am I wrong or just perverse ?

I fought with this too. It would be nice to just leave it, but being hairy meant alot of pain removing wafers, and inability to get the hairs trimmed thru all the sticky gunk. The solution was to use benzoin compound tincture which leaves my skin nice and clean. Thanks polushdan!

When I did it, there was far too much to have left it. Most of the ring was left behind.

We had comic scenes during the middle of the night after a major leak (wasn't funny at the time), with myself, my sister who is a nurse, and her husband all trying to get a bag to stick to me (I giess me being stark naked added to the comedic quality of the situation). When using a ring we decided we were all stumped and it wasn't going to work. I have no intention of trying sgain, I'm pretty happy with my current setup.

How nice to hear someone else tried BCT and found that it really works.

As for the hairy part.....I use an electric beard trimmer to shave around my stoma. However, I do not use Eakin with the horrible residue. I use Geratrix Benzoin Compound Tincture. No residue to deal with, just clean skin.

No need to remove the entire residue. My usual procedure is that I remove pouch, take a shower and scrub the area gently with soap (Ivory) and rinse well with water. In the shower the texture of the residue changes a bit and is easier to remove. I also shave the area where the pouch adheres to skin in the shower. Get out and check the area for any hair I missed use a dry wash rag to cleanup any major bits of seal and then dry it with hair dryer (low heat) if available. There is some residue left but it is not globs, more of a thick film. This film doesn’t seem to hurt the adhesion of the new Eakins seal (I use the regular thickness) at all and I think it gives a bit of extra skin protection in case there is any seepage. I also use the Brava strips for more security. I get 3 to 4 days between changes.

The stomahesive paste comes off really easily after 2 days, which is ideal for me. Someone on here said they were told it starts to break down after 48 hours, whatever the cause, it's great.

As.my routine is to remove the bag on Tues, Thurs and Sat, then have a shower, any remaining adhesive comes off naturally, so after the shower the skin is really clean and free of paste. I can then apply the new bag. Took a while to get this routine sown, but having done so, it works a treat for me. A nice simple routine with simple products is perfect for me.

Thanks, all, for the replies. I didn't scrub the adhesive residue on my Saturday change, just got the big globs off. Everything seems to be okay so far. I'll know for sure when I change tonight. Regarding being hairy, my ostomy nurse in the hospital said not to shave the hair because it could lead to infection. My surgeon said to use Nair (ouch!). I have trimmed some with scissors but that's about it. My hunch is things would stick better without the hair but I'm not sure what to do.

Like Eva Lou, I don't bother removing goo either. Well, when I shower commando after removing the old wafer, I use my fingernails to gently remove the big huge chunks of wafer and any obvious bits, but don't care about whatever is left after that-- I just dab the skin around the wafer to dry it and then put the new wafer with ring right on top of any old goo and it all melts together. Hasnt reduced wear time at all.

Bania i'm post op four months too and had the same problem!! Here's what works for me - make sure u shave around the area regularly to remove the hair and buy a exfoliating mit to wear to gently rub liquid soap around the area and it lifts the residue away easily. Rinse with water and dry ready to apply next bag. Works a treat - I actually have problems using my hands too and trust me this works much better than trying all ways to remove the glue. It isnt rough on your skin at all btw. Give it a try. smilewinkgrin

When I had my ileostomy I used the same product combo (Sensura Mio one piece and an Eakin ring - worked really well for me). I'm not that hairy, but always noticed adhesive stuff left on the hairs around my stoma. I found that spraying it with Coloplast's adhesive spray (Brava) worked well enough. After I sprayed around the stoma, the adhesive would come off the hairs with a wipe. The easiest option was just to keep those hairs trimmed right down though.

Ah, 2 years later and my thread has been resurrected. Since then I have found the pleasure of silicone based alcohol-free adhesive remover spray and wipes. (I use Convatec Sensi-Care spray and Welland wipes.) I switched from Eakin to Hollister Adapt rings, which leave far less residue. The Adapt rings are much harder to remove, but the spray takes them off easily. I also have been using a trimmer to trim the hair regularly. So all that has solved this particular problem.
