JPouch doctor?

I need help! My husband has had a Jpouch for 15/16 years. He had UC for several years before making the decision to have surgery. He has had a new set of issues for the last several years and we have not been able to find a doctor to help us. What kind of doctor do you see after surgery for regular long term care?

Family doctors never seem to have an understanding of how his body works now, or how to care for it. I'm not certain he needs a surgeon at this point, and there was a lack of follow through with the last one he saw. He sees an Oncologist for his severe anemia issues. But, what kind of doctor should be seeing for his JPouch and issues directly related to that? Gastro?

I have been doing a bit of research, but don't feel like I am finding the answer.

My gastro told me I wouldn't need to see her anymore once I got the surgery because the surgeon would take over after that. So you might have a hard time finding a GI doc who knows enough about Jpouches.

I kept seeing my surgeon. She insists on seeing me every year for a check up. in fact, I was late this year, it, slipped my mind, and I got a lecture about it. She said she will do this until she's no longer in the business and then she'll send me to someone else. You might want to try another colorectal surgeon with Jpouch experience.

I only see a GI, not a surgeon anymore, but like Sue said my GI doctor is at a large teaching hospital in a city. If you can't find a GI who has experience treating j-pouches, you may have better luck with a colorectal surgeon.
