Ok, this is totally embarrassing, but my ass is killing me. ( I know the temptation to make some bad jokes here) I had my rectum removed way back in 96 and while it took a long time for it to heal, it finally did with minimal problems, until this summer. For a lot of the summer the scar on the rectum felt weird, and like something was alive under it. Then, this weekend it all of a sudden feels like it was ripped open. My whole butt hurts and I have no idea why; it hurts to move around, walk, even cough. It is also really sore to the touch, it feels like a giant bruise. Any ideas what is going on?? I am wondering if I have a hernia or something (the inability to cough without ridiculous body contortions and pain is what makes me think that might be it). This is making me really nervous, any thoughts are welcome...

Hi Nancy,
Pain is a sign of inflammation. If you've had a fever with pain and inflammation, I'd definately seek medical assistance. You could have an abcess or cellulitis. That would be an odd place for a hernia.

Thanks for the thoughts Cathy, I hope you are right! I am just counting down until my dr's office is open and I can call. I don't have any redness or rash, can you have cellulitis without it? All I know is the pain is ridiculous, it feels like I had the surgery yesterday and not 9 years ago. Wish me luck when I call, Nancy

hey i have only been sewed up for a few months , the only trouble ive had was some bad pain, i think it was from the stitches that were still there.

i hope you get feeling better soon, let us know what the doc says.

so I had my cat scan today and have an abscess. He put me on cipro and flagyl and I have to have it drained. He was really surprised that it was an abscess as the surgery was so long ago. How can one appear after so many years? How long will the pain last, I am at my wits end and up for the 4th night in a row, I just can't fall asleep with the pain. Shouldn't he at least of given me something for the pain??? I hope the healing process from the abscess is quick.
