ileostomy and chemo

I had an ileostomy August 2013 for rectal cancer now a new tumor has appeared plus cancer has spread into my liver I will have 6 months chemo anyone else experienced this ,I am really scared. I am a 75 year old male

So sorry you have to go through this. I don't have much experience with this other than hearing friends of friends stories, none of which were rectal or liver cancer. I wish you the best.

I'm so sorry you are scared....and I understand it would be scary.....is there anyone close to talk to about ally this.....family or perhaps through a nurse at the hospital....

Hi! I am 27 and was dx with stage 3 rectal cancer, as well as FAP. I had a totally colectomy with rectum removed, temp ileo, and then I have had my takedown since March. I went through six months of chemo and before the colectomy they had me take Xeloda, chemo in pill form, as well as radiation to shrink tumor. I know exactly how you feel. But since it has spread to your liver, is it stage 4? Have they removed your rectum yet? Are you planning on being reversed after chemo? Do you have any problems with any incontenece now? As long as you stay on top of everything and really try HARD to keep your mind staying positive you can beat this!

If you are concerned about the function of the ileo while undergoing chemo you shouldnt have any problems. Yours is a bit different but generally with rectal cancer that involves the removal of the entire colon and is stage 3 or greater, chemo radiation is done first then surgery with a loop ileo ( if there is going to be a J pouch or of some kind re-attach), then chemo and then take down the ileo and reattach. So the chemo is done while the ileo is in place. This really can make things easier as the chemo can give bowel issues so if you already have an end ileo you should have no problems. I had about 4 months of chemo with a loop ileo and no issues related to the ileo. Good luck with your treatment.
